Material vs. Non Material Culture

Lesson Purpose: The purpose of this lesson is to give students an understanding of how
the definitions of material culture and non material culture differ. Students will also be
identifying the difference between needs and wants and determining how we decide
what we value as a society. Students will have the opportunity to voice their opinion
and examples to their classmates through discussion and they will also be identifying
material culture in their own lives.
Student Outcomes:
Describe trends that reflect the globalization of culture.
Analyze factors that contribute to the globalization of culture.
Demonstrate an understanding of the impact of globalization of culture.
Authentic Student Assessment:
Students will be assessed both formatively and summatively on this assignment. A rubric
has been designed with the students where they are responsible to understand and
know the criteria that is expected to be assessed.
Prior Knowledge:
It is expected that students will have some knowledge and skills in terms of materialism
from both personal experiences and the media. Students will have also previously been
introduced to needs and wants.
Lesson:
During the first class, together we will read the newspaper article on Material
Culture.
Following reading the article, together we will spend the class discussing our
thoughts on the guide questions on the article sheet.
For the second class, students will be completing the Material vs Non Material
Culture assignment for assessment independently. They will use personal
experiences, the textbook, and knowledge from the article to complete this
assignment.

Closure:
Together as a class, we will review some interesting findings we have of our own
personal material culture. We will also discuss whether or not this assignment has

impacted the way we determine what is important to us, and how we recognize our
own personal needs or wants.

Ensure all students are engaged and participating in the class discussion.
