Cake Decorating, Cake Boss Competition

Lesson Purpose:
Students will be using all the skills and information that they have compiled over
the last week to decorate cupcakes and host a Cake Boss Competition.
Students will use their planning as well as their creativity to decorate a set of 4
cupcakes that will be judged by their peers.
Student Outcomes:
Unit on Food Service.
Subunit on Cake Decorating.
No GCOs/SCOs provided.
Authentic Student Assessment:
Summative assessment will be provided to students on the basis of their creation
and the following criteria: creativity, planning and preparation, effort, ability to
adhere to directions, enthusiastic attempt, appropriate behaviour and clean up.
Prior Knowledge:
Students can use their own knowledge from previous cake baking/decorating
attempts, cakes they have eaten, cakes baked by grandparents, parents, etc. to
contribute to this discussion.
Students will have knowledge from the research they completed this week
through lessons, and internet research.
Lesson:
Students will be given 4 cupcakes each as well as access to food colouring, icing,
decorations.
Students will use the period to prepare and decorate their cupcakes.
After finishing, students are to put their cupcakes on display so that their
classmates will vote silently based on the following criteria to determine the
Ultimate Cake Boss of PVEC: professionalism, creativity, effort, technique,
edibility.
The winner of the silent vote will be crowned the Ultimate Cake Boss.
Students are to clean up all of their materials before leaving the class.

Closure:
Students will learn the results of the peer vote, and they will clean up their area.
Students are allowed to take home their creation, or pack them in a plastic
container.
Professional Growth Target:
Ensure the classroom is cleaned properly before students are permitted to leave.
