Teaching
Procedure:
1. Motivation:
The
students
will
see
that
the
room
looks
different
because
there
are
cards
hanging
around
the
room.
This
will
capture
their
attention,
then
I
will
show
a
regrouping
song
on
youtube.
The
video
is
silly,
but
will
provide
a
new
reminder
on
regrouping.
2. Prior
Learning:
We
have
been
working
on
addition
and
subtraction
with
regrouping
for
the
last
several
weeks
3. Statement
of
Objective:
Today,
we
are
going
to
continue
to
practice
regrouping
with
addition
and
subtraction
problems
and
we
are
going
to
use
three
digit
numbers
4. Purpose
(statement/question):
Addition
and
subtraction
with
regrouping
is
all
around
us.
This
is
a
skill
that
you
will
use
for
the
rest
of
your
life!
5. Instructional
Steps:
Guided
Practice:
I
will
hand
each
table
a
group
of
cards
and
ask
them
to
cut
the
cards
out.
They
will
then
sort
the
cards
into
whether
they
would
need
to
regroup
or
not.
After
they
have
sorted,
I
will
explain
the
way
to
self-check
their
answers.
This
simple
activity
will
help
the
students
to
remember
when
to
regroup
and
when
to
just
solve
the
problem.
Independent
Practice:
After
the
sorting
activity,
each
student
will
be
handed
a
recording
sheet
to
put
on
his
or
her
clipboard.
There
will
be
addition
and
subtraction
problems
posted
around
the
room
(some
that
require
regrouping,
some
that
do
not).
Students
will
be
assigned
a
starting
place
and
will
have
a
set
amount
of
time
at
each
card.
When
the
buzzer
goes
off,
students
will
rotate
to
the
next
one.
Closure:
Turn
and
talk
with
your
table
how
would
you
explain
to
a
second
grader
who
is
just
starting
to
learn
about
regrouping
when
to
regroup
for
addition.
Review:
The
teacher
will
review
the
days
lesson.
Future
Learning:
We
are
going
to
keep
working
with
addition
and
subtraction
with
regrouping,
and
three
digit
numbers.
Lesson
Extension
and/or
Modification:
Extension:
There
will
be
several
challenge
problems
that
will
encourage
the
GT
students
to
think
critically
to
solve.
Modifications:
The
group
activity
will
allow
the
students
to
work
together
this
will
help
students
who
are
struggling
to
be
able
to
learn
from
their
peers.
Assessment
of
Learning:
The
recording
sheet
will
be
graded
for
accuracy.
More
than
likely,
students
will
not
be
able
to
get
to
every
problem,
but
I
will
grade
the
amount
that
they
did
get
to
finish.
