DIAPHRAGM Valves

DIAPHRAGM VALVE
A diaphragm valve (see figure 13 below) is not like the other valves. It does
not have a valve disc. The diaphragm valve uses a flexible diaphragm as its
opening / closing element.

When the diaphragm is forced downward it completely closes the valve.
When it is completely open the diaphragm is out of the line of flow so it does
not restrict it. There is no valve stem in the flow path. No stem packing is
required. These types of valve require less maintenance than the
conventional valves.
The diaphragm is usually made of a rubberised compound so these valves
are often used where highly corrosive materials are present. Figure 14 shows
the three position of a diaphragm valve.
