Safety Valves

Safety Valves.
Safety valves release excess pressure so as to prevent damage to the
system. They are usually spring loaded to a pre-set pressure limit.
When the pressure in the system reaches this limit the valve will open fully,
allowing the excess pressure to escape. The excess pressure is either
allowed to escape into the atmosphere, or sometimes it is burnt off. Once the
excess pressure has been released the valve will close.
They are normally on steam or gas lines. (see figure 20).
