1. THESIS STATEMENT
Present the projects argument or interpretation in two sentences. If you are using the NHD theme, you might want to
make it evident in your thesis statement.

Ulysses S. Grant was a brigadier general of the Union and the 18th President of the United States.
Grant was an excellent general and a great leader because he never gave up. He led the Union to
victory in the American Civil War, which ended slavery and therefore changed the lives of many
African Americans. It also guaranteed that the Confederate and the Union would remain together as
one country the United States.

2. SUMMARY OF PROJECT
Briefly explain your project and its conclusion. Include: How and why did change happen and what was the impact? Why
is it historically significant? What historical meaning or importance can we learn from your findings?

Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885) commanded the Union army during the American Civil War (18611865) and was the 18th U.S. president from 1869 to 1877. During the Civil War, Grant, a determined
leader, was given command of all the U.S. armies. After the war, he became a national hero, and the
Republicans nominated him for president in 1868. My topic is historically significant because if the
Union, which was led by Ulysses S. Grant, hadnt won the war, there would still have been slavery,
or, at least, for a longer time. Instead, Grant won the war, and slavery was abolished from the United
States, changing the lives of many African Americans, and the Confederate and the Union become
one nation as the United States.

Grant had great leadership because he never gave up no matter how many men he lost. He led the
Union to victory in the American Civil War, and served two terms as President of the United States.
Grants legacy is that slavery was abolished from the United States.
Grant remains an important figure in American history, and he is remembered for his many
contributions to the United States. His house in Galena, Illinois is now a memorial. There are many

other memorials of him in the United States, including the memorial of him in Lincoln Park. Grant
Park in Chicago, Illinois is named after him.
