March News

March 5th , 2015

Dear Parents/Guardians,
Here is a brief overview of the topics being covered this month.
Reach for the Stars
This months Reach for the Stars students are Marissa, Sage, Maia, Marcus, Owen, Robert,
Alex, Haily, Aida, Noah, Case, Abby, Kiara, Tyler, Cheyenne, Avalon, Alandra, Jorja, Tony, Ally, and
Martina.
These students are recognized for having completed all of their homework and assignments on
time. For the month of February there were 21 students who had a 100% completion rate! Well
done! Please continue to encourage your child and review the importance of homework.
Language
This month in reading we will be finishing up our unit on visualizing. In writing, they will identify
which details are important to the main idea. At the end of this month we will begin discussing
speeches. Grade 4 is the first year that students are expected to participate in public speaking.
Our class will start writing their Speeches at the end of this month. Please discuss with your
son/daughter different speech topics that may interest him or her.
Math
We are just beginning a unit on multiplication. The grade 4 students will be multiplying 2 and 3
digit numbers by 1 digit. One of the goals of this chapter is to create and solve multiplication
problems using different strategies.
It is very important that you practice the multiplication facts daily with your child! You can also visit
the Nelson website at www.mathk8.nelson.com for more ideas to help your child learn
mathematics. Multiplication.com is another great website for extra practice.
Here are some practice activities you can try at home with your child:
1) Your child can look through store flyers for items sold in groups, recording the items,
the size of the groups, and its price.
2) Have multiplication facts posted on the fridge and review them while cooking dinner
3) Your child can create and solve their own multiplication problems
4) Play multiplication math games on studyladder.com or multiplication.com
Science
This month we will continue to learn about habitats. Our Unit test will be on March 11th. Following
the test, students will be working on a habitat brochure project. They will be researching a habitat
and putting all their research information into a brochure. There will be more information to follow.

Religion
We will be continuing our Lent Unit this month. We will be talking about the importance of Holy
Week and how we can prepare our hearts for the coming of Jesus. The Catholic Graduate
Expectation we will be focusing on this month is We have Ideas. On Monday March 9 th our class
will be hosting the school mass with Lenten Promises as our theme.
Phys. Ed.
This month we are beginning our unit on Target Games. Please remind your son/daughter to bring
a change of clothes for gym. Our gym days are Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know. I wish you and your family a wonderful
March Break!
Thank you for all of your support!
Sincerely,
Denise Tunks
