BASIC PRODUCTIVITY TOOLS: SPREADSHEETS

Name: Danielle Pino

Grade Level: 1st grade
Content Area: Math
Basic Productivity Tool Used: Graph Club
Standards Addressed: CCGPS.1.MD.4
Organize, represent, and interpret data with up to three categories; ask and answer
questions about the total number of data points, how many in each category, and
how many more or less are in one category than in another.
Blooms Level of Critical Thinking:
X- Remembering X- Understanding X- Applying X- Analyzing X-Evaluating
Creating
Description of how to implement in the class: The teacher will introduce the
activity by modeling how to collect data, add the information into Graph Club and
then analyze the information using a variety of graph formats line, bar, picture,
circle. The teacher will demonstrate how to put information into Graph Club by taking
a quick poll on the classes favorite sport from the list provided. The teacher will then
lead the students through the steps of creating a graph using Graph Club. A title,
images representing the various sports and specific color assigned to each sport will
be added to the graph.
While exploring the various graphs, the teachers will prompt students to analyze the
information provided in the graph using appropriate math terms such as greater than,
less than, most, least and equal. Statements will be added to the writing component
of Graph Club where various statements will be listed.
The teacher will then expand the higher thinking levels and ask the students to
gather information over the weekend. The students will be asked to survey their
friends and/ or family over the weekend. The survey will include four fruits
(strawberry, orange, banana, and grapes). The students will return from gathering the
information over the week/ end then brought to the computer lab. The students will
then began on creating their own graph from Graph Club using the information they
retrieved from the survey. They will be asked to write 2 word problems using the
graph to answer the question. They will then pass around their graphs and word
problems and solve them.
Level of Technology Implementation (LoTi): Before the students were allowed to
graph the information they retrieved, the LoTi level would be a level 2. Since the
teacher allows the students to graph the information that they retrieved it becomes a
level 4. This involves the students to collect information, graph the information, and
analyze the results. To move up the LoTi level we could print out a second copy and
give it to the other 1st grade teachers to use with their class.
Description of the sample spreadsheet and graph/chart provided *: The
graph displays the data collected as students retrieved their families and friends
favorite fruit. Students discuss math concepts such as more, less, equal, the most,
the least, the total, etc.

Other comments about your proposed spreadsheet/graph/chart activity: The
Graph Club activity can easily be extended to support high levels of thinking and
1
higher LoTi levels. This activity was at a beginner level which includes them to
collect, graph, analyze and evaluate other data.
