University of Utah 195 South Central Campus Drive Salt Lake City, UT 84112 February 10, 2015 To the Members of the Scholarship Selection Committee: Julie is one of our top students here at AMES, evidenced by her transcript, and is a most amazing young woman with a bright future. She is academically inquisitive, involved in community issues, and laserfocused on her future. Julie has been a part of many facets of the AMES community, from being a peer tutor to other AMES students to being an officer in our HOSA chapter. Because of her interest in pursuing a career in medicine, for her internship placement she worked as a junior volunteer at Intermountain Medical Center, run by Intermountain Healthcare. She was hoping to have patient interaction and to assist with patient needs, however minimal, but was placed in the hospital gift shop. While this was a disappointment to her, she was able to use the experience positively to expand her skills in working with people in and out of the medical field. She also discovered that she developed and honed her problemsolving skills with the ever changing questions and situations that became commonplace during her shifts. She told me that she surprised herself when she realized how resilient she is. While her primary focus is on science and math, and she is looking forward to a career in medicine, she has dedicated many hours toward several issues in the community. These projects include organizing and participating in two 5K Fun Runs that benefitted Salt Lake Donated Dental Services, organizing and donating in at least four American Red Cross blood drives, and organizing four holiday collection drives and blanket-making projects for the Homeless Youth Resource Center, including preparing and serving a meal to their clients. Currently she is helping to plan a service project to bring awareness to the school and raise funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in Spring 2015. Her organizational skills have been a real plus to her leadership with HOSA. Julie is a phenomenal tutor in all subjects. She is very generous with her time and will even offer to help before she is asked if she thinks that the other student might be struggling. She is always smiling and finds ways to teach and help support other students that is not intimidating or condescending in any way. She can easily laugh at herself and brings a radiance to any meeting with her charm. I can highly recommend Julie as an outstanding student and one who would fully appreciate the educational advantages gained by receiving this scholarship. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions concerning Julie, her participation at AMES and her suitability in receiving this scholarship.
