GTAW Qualified by Testing Test Plan

Passing the following tests will qualify the GTAW process for production welding of all plate,
pipe, and box tube weldments in 1F, 2F, 1G and 2G positions with a thickness range of 1/83/4.

Visual Inspection
Acceptance Criteria
The specimen shall pass if

The specimen is found to be free of cracks

No craters exist or are filled to the full cross section of the weld
The face of the weld is flush with the surface of the base metal with undercut not in

excess of 1/32 and weld reinforcement no exceeding 1/8

The root of the weld shows no evidence of cracks, incomplete fusion, or inadequate
joint penetration

Non-Destructive Testing
Procedure
The entire length of the weld, except for the discarded ends, shall be examined using
either RT or UT in conformance with Section 6, Part E or F.
Acceptance Criteria
Weld shall conform to the requirements of Section 6, Part C.

Root and Face Bend Test

Procedure
Each specimen shall be bent in a bend test jig that meets the requirements shown in
Figure 4.15. The specimen shall be placed on the die member with the face of the weld
directed toward the gap for face bends and with the root of the weld directed toward the
gap for root bends. The plunger shall force the specimen into the die until the specimen
becomes U-shaped. The weld and HAZs shall be centered and completely within the bent
portion of the specimen after testing.
Acceptance Criteria
The convex surface of the bend test specimen shall be visually examined for surface
discontinuities. For acceptance, the surface shall contain no discontinuities exceeding the
following dimensions
1/8 measured in any direction on the surface
3/8 for the sum of the greatest dimensions of all discontinuities exceeding 1/32 but

less than or equal to 1/8

1/4 for the maximum corner crack, except when that corner crack results from
visible slag inclusion or other fusion type discontinuity, then the 1/8 maximum shall
apply. Specimens with corner cracks exceeding 1/4 with no evidence of slag
inclusions or other fusion type discontinuity shall be disregarded, and a replacement
test specimen from the original weldment shall be tested.

Reduced-Section Tensile Test

Procedure

Before testing, the least width and corresponding thickness of the reduced section
shall be measured. The specimen shall be ruptured under tensile load, and the
maximum load shall be determined. The cross-sectional area shall be obtained by
multiplying the width by the thickness. The tensile strength shall be obtained by
dividing the maximum load by the cross-sectional area.
Acceptance Criteria
The tensile strength shall be no less than the minimum of the specified tensile range
of the base metal used.
