Break Test & Macroetch Test

Passing the following tests will allow the specified welder to weld in production all plate, pipe,
and box tube weldments in both 1F and 2F positions with a thickness range of 1/8-Unlimited
thickness and a dihedral angle range of 600-1350.

Fillet Weld Break Test

Procedure
Preceding the break test, a visual inspection shall be performed to the acceptance criteria
of 6.9 using table 6.1 and figure 5.4. A 6 inch segment will be cut from the center of test
specimen containing at least one stop and one start within its length. The specimen will
then be positioned so that when a load is applied, the root of the weld experiences
tension. The load will then be increased until the specimen experiences failure or folds
upon itself.
Acceptance Criteria
The specimen shall pass if

The specimen bends flat upon itself, or

If the fillet weld fractures, the fractured surface shows evidence of complete fusion to
the root of the joint with no inclusion or porosity larger than 3/32 in its greatest

dimension
The sum of the greatest dimensions of all inclusions and porosity do not exceed 3/8
throughout the entirety of the specimen

Macroetch Test

Procedure
The specimen will be removed one inch from the end of the weldment as specified by
Figure 4.36. In preparation for the macroetch, the specimen shall be given a finish that is
suitable for the macroetch examination. A suitable solution shall be used for etching to
give a clear definition of the weld.
Acceptance Criteria
The specimen shall pass if the fillet weld has fusion to the root of the joint, but not
necessarily beyond.
