Music Across

Generations
By: Callie Saric

Our Timeline

My Interview Report
I interviewed my mom and dad to get two different
perspectives on the music from when they were
growing up. I wanted to get a male vs. female
perspective.

Mom Interview
When my mom was growing up, she liked to listen to Styx and Supertramp,
both pop rock bands
It reminded her of grammar school and hanging out in her room with the
radio blasting up
Her parents influenced her musical tastes until middle school when she
really started to listen to what she wanted to
Record store to purchase the songs
Her musical styles have changed a little bit know, because she enjoys the
pop songs now that have positive messages and a happy beat
Music is changing nowadays and that rap is becoming present in more
songs

Dad Interview
AC DC and all kinds of hard rock music
He loved the rhythm and pounding of the guitar and drums, that classic
electric rock sound
My dad would listen to these songs with his friends in the summer time and
in high school and middle school. That is when he really began to decide
what music he wanted to listen to
As my dad got older, his musical tastes have changed because he spends
a lot of time traveling and now listens to what is on the radio. He also
wanted to expose us to different types of music so that we can get a
chance to hear a variety.
My dad thinks that social media has changed music most.

What I Have Learned From Interview

I have learned a lot about how my parents musical tastes developed,
who influenced them, and how they got access to the music they
liked to listen to
I can connect to them because I enjoy listening to music just as much
as them, and I have been exposed to all different forms of music
thanks to them showing me
I have learned so much about how technology has changed and
progressed over the years, and how my parents listened to music
based on the technology they had access to

Self Music Perspective

When I was little I knew all of the words to Trains hit Drops of Jupiter from
2001 and Hey Soul Sister when I got a little older
In the car, my mom and dad would play music all of the time, and every now
and then I would be flipping through our book of CDs and would find a CD
that I didnt recognize. One would especially catch my eye every time - the
Songs About Jane album from Maroon 5
After a while of listening to these songs I fell in love with the style of Maroon
5s music
I loved all music in general growing up, it was always something I used to
cheer me up and make me smile
I listened to a lot of the kid stations in the car, and my favorite artist for
childrens music was Laurie Berkner, and I knew all of the words to all of her
songs

Self Music Perspective Continued

The styles of music when I was little are close to the same as now, but there is more
rap music nowadays, and there are more powerful and unique female voices now
The songs from when I was little were more emotional songs about love or a good
message inside. There are still some songs with a great message nowadays, but
the songs about love have intensified and have become more inappropriate,
especially in the rap music
My musical tastes have not changed much now. I still enjoy the songs with positive
messages, as well as pop music and pop ballads as well. I still love Maroon 5, and
Train is still pretty popular
My musical tastes change slightly based on what I hear on the radio, because I
spend a lot of time in the car going to different places
I am not a fan of country, hard rock music, and rap. I do not really like the voices of
country singers, and hard rock is just too loud for me and I feel that the artists are
more screaming instead of singing

Interview/Self Comparison
Me

I listen to music through modern

technology such as my phone or
computer
My favorite band that I like now is
Maroon 5
I enjoy mostly pop music, slow
music and upbeat dance music with
unique messages hidden behind
the lyrics
I listen to music all of the time,
whether I am at home relaxing,
working out, or in the car

Mom/Dad

My parents listened to music on a record

player, 8-track tape, and radio
Their favorite artists/bands were ACDC,
Supertramp, and Styx
When they were growing up, popular
music was mostly rock and roll, upbeat
music that did not have any rap music
and had a natural sound
My parents listened to music for fun with
their friends, or in the car on work trips
on the radio

What I Learned

I have never really sat down and thought about the type of music I listen to,
I usually turn on the radio and surf through the channels until I come upon a
song or style that I like
I learned a lot about my parents that I did not know before about them. I
never knew where their preferences came from or what they liked to listen
to growing up
I also learned about what technology was like before I was born, and how it
has evolved and effected music and the popularity of certain styles of music
as time progresses
Overall, I learned about how music progressed as time passes and how
styles have changed over the years in music across generations. A little
piece of each style or knowledge has been passed down to the next
decade in technology and music, and as music has evolved it gets bigger
and better, adding on to the successes in the past
