Chapter 8

1. How does Fitzgerald achieve a melancholic mood in the beginning of this chapter? He
describes how Gatsby effortlessly attempts to win Daisy back and even though
Gatsby has the thought in the back of his mind that Daisy is not going to return he
still tries to win her love back even waiting outside of Tom and Daisys house to
ensure Tom did not hurt her.
2. How are seasons used in constructing this novel? The novel begins in the summer this
signifies the story coming to life and the beginning of something new. When is
started in the summer it represented the full bloom of the love between Daisy and
Gatsby as the seasons change later in the novel it represents the downfall of the
winter the cold sorrow. It reflects the end of Gatsby and Daisys relationship.
3. Who is Dan Cody and what is his significance in Gatsby's life? Dan Cody was a wealthy
man he owned a yacht Gatsby worked digging for clams and saw his yacht one day,
he realized that a storm was coming so he set out to warn Cody after he did this
Cody was so grateful that he took him in to work for him.
4. How does Nick's statement "You're worth the whole bunch put together" show a change
in Nick from the beginning of the novel? Nick at the beginning of the novel is
disgusted with these rich people he feels as if they are bored and they bother others
because they simply have nothing more to do, at the end he realizes Gatsby is
separate from that category that he means so much more and he is only wealthy
because he wanted to impress Daisy.
5. How does T. J. Eckleberg affect Mr. Wilson? T.J Eckleburgs eyes begin to glow in the
story Wilson looks at his eyes as if they are Gods eyes he begins to believe that the
person who killed myrtle must have been her lover he seeks to find out who killed
myrtle and get revenge as he believes it was Gods wish to do so.
Chapter 9
1. Why did Nick take care of Gatsby's funeral? Daisy and Tom fled the town, after his
death those who once fled Gatsbys house suddenly disowned him as if they never
knew a Gatsby.
2. Who attended Gatsby's funeral? How and why is this significant? Some of his servants,
minister, owl eyes, nick, and his father Henry Gatz. This is significant because tom
& daisy did not come because Daisy is the one who was really driving the car when
Myrtle was killed, Wolfshiem didnt come because he is a gangster and he didnt
want to have involvement with Gatsby, although Gatsbys house was always filled
with friends in the end no one really loved Gatsby except for Nick.

3. What is the purpose of Nick's last meeting with Jordan? He wishes to break up with
Jordan he was going to leave without telling her but felt as if that would have been
completely irresponsible and he wanted to let her know before he left to return
home.
4. Why does Nick call Tom and Daisy "careless people"? Tom and Daisy are called
careless people because they are cruel tom repeatedly was abusive to myrtle and
even though daisy was driving he told George to kill Gatsby.
5. What is the significance of the Green Light in the novel? What might the color green
symbolize? What might the light symbolize? When you put them together, what then
does the green light symbolize? The green light symbolizes Gatsbys dream (Daisy)
this also represents the American Dreamwhich is not attainable. The color green
represents the many changes in Gatsbys life as he switches up to impress Daisy.
