Breakup of Yugoslavia
Ms. Tavani
March 4, 2015
-What religious tensions existed in Yugoslavia pre-and during World War II?
Yugoslavia is basically ruled by Serbs who came from the Serbian Empire. Two years
later Yugoslavia was made up of Sunni Muslims, Orthodox Catholic Christians and
Roman Catholic Christians. Each of these types of religions had very strong views and
claims and some held grudges against each other at times which caused tensions. Also
in Bosnia the Croats and the Muslims backed independence while the Serbs didnt.
This caused major issues and tensions grew as time went on.
-Why was Tito important in Yugoslavia?
Tito was known as the communist president of Yugoslavia and definitely held the
federation together so it wouldnt try to top control. He died in 1980 and always tried
to encourage nationalism to the Serbs in home and away from home where there were
large groups of Serbs.
-What were Milosevics goals in Yugoslavia?
Milosevics goals were to make the Serbia the best and he wanted control. He was the
president and was a part of the genocide in Bosnia.
-Who did Serbian nationalist target in the Serbian Genocide?
In any fight there will always be a target. In the case of the Serbian genocide, the
Serbian nationalist went after the Bosnians. They split the women and men. They sent
the women and girls on buses to be held captive and the men and boys that stayed back
were most likely killed.
-What happened in Srebrenica?
The Serb forces managed to attack on Srebrenica, which is one of the towns under
Bosnias control. They split the women and men. They sent the women and girls on
buses to be held captive and the men and boys that stayed back were most likely
killed. Some of the women were also treated unfair. They were raped, brutally beaten
and or sexually assaulted.
-What does this incident suggestion about European leadership and the role of the
UN?

When the Serb forces went in and attacked Bosnia it made me think that the European
leadership take on the incident was just to go in to separate people and families to
seize control. They created a bigger problem rather than resolving it.
-Who was responsible for eventual peace in Bosnia?
The E.U. tried to resolve peace. The option that they tried was mediation, but it
obviously didnt work if a killing spree went off after.
-In your own words, describe ethnic cleansing.
An ethnic cleansing is basically the killing of an ethnic group. If people do not like a
certain ethnic group they cleanse themselves and just go off killing whomever belongs
to the unwanted group.
-How did the Bosnian map look after 1995?
The map of Bosnia was divided after 1995. The Croat-Muslim federation was one part
of Bosnia. The other half was filled up with Republika Srpska.
-Name two problems Bosnia is facing today?
Problems that are occurring in Bosnia today are the breakouts due to anger. They will
display their anger in protests, fires, and all around violence. Also the issue of military
intervention. This issue goes against some of the beliefs and that there is always a
chance of genocide.
