Hello Mr. Goodman,

I am a Social Work student at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, I am from
Pembroke, NC, and I will be graduating in May with my Bachelors degree. For my field work
seminar class, we are creating a website for our e-portfolio that is required for graduation. The
advocacy project that is part of this assignment is for us to join an online advocacy group to
advocate for a human rights issue and then to make contact with our local representative. I
have signed a petition on change.org which is titled, "HELP ADHD/ADD CHILDREN! Over 6
million in the United States! No more medication! A change needs to be made in ALL
SCHOOLS". As of May 2013 the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition
(DSM-5) reevaluated previous definitions, signs, and symptoms of ADHD and ADD; they have
concluded that ADD is no longer a diagnosis. Instead of using medication as a way to treat the

symptoms of ADHD, maybe some kind of education program should be implemented into the
school system to all surrounding counties just for ADHD students so they can get the one on one
help they need. It is important for teachers to understand this medical condition because
a teachers perceptions of problem behavior and ADHD largely overlap because both involved
disruption to instructions in the classroom and hindrance to a childs and their peers learning.
Sometimes medication is not the answer and I feel as if a schools staff should provide support for
ADHD students and to understand the implications of it. Here is the website of the petition:

Thank you for your time and I hope to hear back from you about this issue soon.
Thanks, Kendra Chavis

Petition Develop an education

program for ADHD/ADD children
to be implemented in ALL
schools Change.org
I may be making this petition because I have an 11
year old son with ADHD but Im not only doing it for
my son but for all of the children out there with this
condition Only the parents of these children really
know how hard it is, how much they struggle and

suffer. I dont feel ADHD/ADD children are getting

the help they need, maybe because they dont look
disable but a condition that makes learning
extremely challenging for children has to be paid
attention to, maybe not in the way of a learning
disability because I dont think that is the case, but
they definitely need help. I feel that because of the
increasing number of children being diagnosed with
ADHD/ADD it is time that all schools should be able
to accommodate these kids, there are just so many,
there should be an education program implemented
for them; effective teaching and testing methods,
smaller class groups, special teachers willing to deal
with these

Dear Ms. Chavis,

Thank you for contacting the office of Rep. Ken Goodman. Rep. Goodman enjoys hearing from
constituents and was appreciative of the information you sent him regarding an education
program for ADHD/ADD children. As a former school board member who is also married to an
educator, this topic is one with which Rep. Goodman is familiar. Rep. Goodman asked me to
convey to you his wishes for success in your advocacy project.
Best,
Judy Veorse
