How to covert NSE Bhavcopy

from .csv or .dbf format file to Metastock Format data file


Requirements
a. NSE Bhavcopy which can be downloaded from www.nseindia.com
b. MS Excel for opening and editing this CSV or DBF file.
c. Metastock Downloader for converting the edited file from ASCII format to Metastock format.

Processes are as follows: 1. Download NSE Bhavcopy from NSE India and open it in Microsoft Excel. It will look like
this-

2. Now delete the columns of Series, Last, Prev.close, Totalvalue & Timestamp. Now it will
look like this

3. Now Insert a column for Date before Open column in excel sheet, by right clicking on B
column. After inserting date column now put the date (for 2-3 stocks) for which bhavcopy is
taken Its available at top of the window. Please note that date typed is in metastock date
format i.e. MM/DD/YYYY. It will look like this

4. Now select both the dates typed as shown in picture above; then put the cursor at lower right
hand corner of the selected area and drag it down further, to copy the same date for all the
850+ stocks till last It will look like this

5. Now remove the First ROW of the sheet that is Headings

6. Now close the Excel sheet by saving it with same name as it was before. Click yes for all the
options for saving.

Now start Metastock downloader for converting the data


1. Click on tools in metastock downloader and click convert

2. It will open a window like below and select the options as shown.

i.e File type : ASCII text , Folder: where the file is (Use browse button), File: Just select the above
edited NSE bhavcopy from browse button.
Destination file type: Metastock, Folder: where ever Metastock data is (Else it will create fresh
data from that date in the folder path given); here it is a folder called NSESecurities in E drive of
comp. (files already created before; as it is updating only)

Now click option button

Here you can click Traverse source folder if you want stocks to be updated in different folders
in alphabetical order (Else it will be remaining in one folder.)

Now click ok. Then click ok. It will update the data (It takes some time like- 5 sec.) and
shows final results like this (If every thing is right):

6. Finally close the window and MS Downloader. Now open the charts in Metastock; you will find it
updated.
Important thing to remember:
1. Close all Metastock charts before updating the data.
2. Update data as per dates on daily basis after closing of market whenever NSE provides
bhavcopy. You can get pending data too from NSE for delayed updation.
