The Beautiful and Damned

Chapter Notes

BOOK ONE:
Chapter One:

The time period is now 1913 and the character Anthony Patch was introduced at the age
of twenty-five.
Adam J. Patch was Anthonys grandfather, a very wealthy, smart, and reforming man. He
married Alicia Withers and they had a son, Adam Ulysses Patch. Adam Ulysses later
married Henrietta Lebrune and they later had a son.
Anthonys mother Henrietta was a singer.
When Anthony was young they went on a trip to England and Switzerland and the hotel
they stayed in that is where his father died.
At the age of eleven both of his parents were dead and his grandmother.
He collected stamps and coins and loved to read.
He graduated from Harvard at twenty years old. His grandfather often called.
His grandfather became sick and died, and after that Anthony decided to change his
lifestyle. He started to look for apartments to live in.
Anthony had a servant to keep his apartment clean.
Anthony received a yearly income of seven thousand dollars inherited from his mother.
Anthony visited his grandfather. His grandfather mentioned that he should write and
make history.
Anthony sees a woman outside his window and he thinks she is beautiful. She is
described as fat and thirty-five.
Another character is introduced, Maury Noble, a good friend of Anthony. Another friend
is introduced, Richard Caramel.
The men continued to chat about art, music, and writing.
A conversation took place between beauty and the voice, explaining what she would
become. The conversation took place seven years before Anthony sat by his windows and
listened to the chimes of St. Annes.

Chapter Two:

The Chapter starts out explaining how the city was coming out and everything was
upgrading.
Richard Caramel explained to Anthony that he had a cousin named Gloria that he wanted
him to meet. Her name was Gloria Gilbert and Anthony said he had heard of her name
and that she is beautiful.

Richard and Anthony had reached the Gilberts and they sat talking about Gloria. Her
mother explained to them that she was out dancing. Mrs. Gilbert explained that she was
worried about Gloria because she just goes and goes.
Anthony and Richard left before Gloria had the chance to get home.
Maury mentioned he had an encounter with Gloria and him and Anthony had an intense
conversation about her.
Gloria and Richard were at Anthonys doorstep. Richard introduced Anthony to Gloria
and the conversation raced. They were flirting and giggling about everything known.
Anthony and Gloria were out having tea and they engaged in interesting conversation.
Gloria explained that she hated being twenty-two. She didnt like the feeling of growing
up, getting married, and having kids.
Brummagem Cabarets after Pullman cars is called a Marathon.
Anthony and Gloria were sharing and intimate dance.

Chapter Three:

Richard Caramel was fired from his first writing job and weeks later he started his own
writing The Demon Lover.
Jenny Martin is introduced as a palmist.
Richard explains to Mrs. Gilbert that he thinks that Anthony is in love with Gloria and
that he is good man for her to marry.
Mrs. Gilbert explains to Richard how Gloria is with men including telling the story about
Carter Kirby.
Richard mentioned that he wanted to know who these people were that Gloria was
hanging out with. It was Joseph Bloeckman, Rachael Jerryl, and Miss Kane.
Gloria made an announcement that she was throwing a dinner party. Dick, Anthony,
Rachael, Muriel, Joseph, and her parents were invited.
The Chevalier Okeefe was a person created by Anthony.
The make believe character was much so like Anthony in many ways. The four
commandments of the monastery rule were poverty, chastity, obedience, and silence.
Geraldine made it very clear that one day soon as he was going to get married.
Anthony and Gloria shared a kiss in a taxi cab. The two continued to go out on dates and
hang out in the New York City night life. Anthony explained that no other girl made him
feel like Gloria did.
Anthony and Gloria kissed again, but often that they got into an argument. Gloria didnt
want to kiss anymore and Anthony got mad and left and she called him an ass.
Dicks book The Demon Lover was on the verge of success. Anthony was focused on
Gloria and how long it had been since he heard from her.
Anthony told Gloria he loved her on the phone.

BOOK TWO:
Chapter One:

Anthony and Gloria were counting down the days they had left to get married. They were
so excited, all they talked about is what they would do.
Anthony and Gloria received a tea set from Tiffanys, drinking set from Maury and a
clock from Joseph. Anthonys grandfather gave them a five thousand dollar check.
Gloria pulls out her diary out of her dresser and began to read the most recent entries.
Gloria always wanted an emerald wedding ring and Anthony answered to her wishes.
Anthony started to worry that he wouldnt be able to provide for Gloria.
Gloria and Anthony were now officially married and now they were in California for a
while. The two realized that the lovey dovey days were over and that arguments would
happen.
One night in the hotel, Anthony thought someone was outside of their room and he
panicked and it is introduced that Gloria has a really bad temper.
Gloria gets upset because she feels that people should not go to the zoo.
Anthony is now twenty-six and Gloria is twenty-three and it seems that their honeymoon
phase is over. Gloria does not know how to deal with confrontation and arguments
because she never did before.
Gloria and Anthony searched for the perfect house they wanted in the country, but ended
up settling for a lease at the Marietta Inn.
They sit and talk for hours deciding what they want their babies to look like and what
they want to have. The debate is quite funny.
It was now November and they were moved into Nicks apartment back home.

Chapter Two:

Gloria did not want to get on the train, so she had a fit. She yelled and screamed, but that
did not work. Anthony grabbed her and would not let her go. She kept telling him to let
her go, but he pulled tighter. He did not care at all because he wanted to show this
incident damaged the relationship permanently.
Gloria finds out that she is pregnant and Anthony finds out too, so they argue about
whats going to happen.
Anthony and his grandpa talked about Anthony becoming a war correspondent, but he
said he had to think about it.
Anthony had a conversation with Joseph and he invited him to their house in Marietta.
Anthony does not know what to do about Gloria going off with Joseph Bloeckman. They
were gone all day long.
Anthony and Gloria were mad about the house because unfortunately they changed their
minds.
Anthony and Gloria made do with the house by throwing a party every weekend.
Glorias mother was dead and she could not handle it well at all.
Gloria was upset about her mother and there was a lot weighing heavy on her chest. The
same night she was feeling all of this, they were having a dinner party. All the men in the
house were drunk and she couldnt take anymore, so she ran away. Finally Anthony
caught up with her at the train station. She explained that Hulk was drunk and making her
uncomfortable.

Chapter Three:

The couple was having another party and of course there was drinking going on. Gloria
snapped on Anthony about his spending habits. She explained that it is hard to pay the
bills, so why is he paying for peoples food and drinks especially other women.
Gloria told Anthony that if she saw him flirting with Racheal Barnes again, she would
leave him.
Anthony and Gloria moved out of the gray house and leased on apartment for one
hundred and fifty a month. Gloria said that Anthony needed to make some money and go
visit his grandfather was very ill.
Anthonys grandfather died in November. Anthony met with his lawyer Mr. Haight to get
a reading of the will.
Anthony and Gloria were now apart in different places. They were both miserable.
Anthony was diagnosed with high blood pressure.

BOOK THREE:
Chapter One:

Anthony was at Camp Hooker. Camp Hooker is a mining Town. He was in a skeleton
infantry company with about a hundred men.
While at camp, Anthony met a girl in lilac and he suggested to take her to the movies one
night and it went bad from there.
The girl Anthony was having an affair with was Dorothy Raycroft and her nickname was
Dot. He made proposals to see her every day and every night and at the same time he was
writing letters to Gloria.
Dorothy Raycroft was only nineteen years old.
Anthony continued to write letters to Gloria about the case and Dot continued to sob
because she wants to be Anthonys wife.
Captain Dunning appointed Anthony to a corporal position.
Both Anthony and Dot had to leave each other. It was time for their departure and Dot
explained that Anthony was her life, she loved him so much that she would die for them/
Anthony has suspicions that Gloria has found somebody else to occupy her time.

Chapter Two:

Gloria made the decision to go back into movies and she did not care about Anthonys
opinion.
Gloria became ill and she had to be in the hospital, she called Bloeckman and told him
that she was ready for the screen. Joseph gave her information for the upcoming
auditions.
Gloria decided that she was going to tell Anthony nothing.
Before the audition, Gloria realized in the mirror that she was awfully thin everywhere.

A couple days after her audition she received a letter basically explaining that she wasnt
the right woman for the part. The same day she received this news was her twenty-ninth
birthday. She cried nonstop.

Chapter Three:

Muriel A.K.A. Miss Kane had a long talk with Anthony about working and money.
Richard Caramel has a talk with Anthony explaining that he needs to get his life together.
The bank had closed Anthonys account and they now have no money and they have to
make it until Monday, so he can go to the broker.
Anthony decides to hock his watch and borrow money from a friend at the Sammy club.
Anthony took it upon himself to go ask Bloeckman for money, but instead he went off on
him about Gloria. He was sloppy drunk and so he and Black began to fight. Anthony was
bleeding and had to take a cab home.
The day it was time to go to court, Dick came to get Gloria to take her to the park and
Anthony waited at home until four. The doorbell rang and it was Dot.
Dot explained that she loved him and wanted him. Anthony kept telling her to get out. He
threatened to kill her if she didnt. She walk towards the door and Anthony threw a
wooden chair.
Gloria and Dick came in the apartment and explained to Anthony that they had won the
case.
