Kindergarten Curriculum

For all subject areas, we have aligned our curriculum with the new Common Core State
Standards, Next Generation Science Standards, Vermont's Grade Level History Expectations and
the International Society for Technology in Education Standards.
Writing: We start the year off with a lot of modeling and then move to shared writing. Students
use drawing, dictating and writing to compose writing pieces. They will apply knowledge of
capitalization and punctuation in writing. They learn how to add details to strengthen pieces and
participate in shared research and writing projects.
Language: Printing upper and lower case letters, acquire and use new vocabulary in speaking
and writing and will participate in shared reading.
Speaking and Listening: Students will participate in collaborative conversations and ask and
answer questions to get information that is not understood. With support, students will describe
familiar people, places, things and events. Students will speak audibly and express thoughts,
feelings, and ideas clearly.
Reading: (In literature) Students will ask and answer questions, retell key details, identify
characters, setting, major events, ask and answer questions about unknown words, describe
illustrations, compare and contrast characters in familiar stories. (In Informational
text) Students will ask and answer questions and identify main topic and key details, make
connections between two ideas, ask and answer questions about unknown words, identify front
cover, back cover, title page, author and illustrator. (In foundational skills) Students will
demonstrate understanding of the organization of basic features of print, apply grade-level
phonics skills and read emergent reader texts.
Mathematics: Five areas are covered in mathematics. We use strategies from Mahesh and many
hands-on manipulatives such as cluster cards, Cuisenaire rods, etc.

numbers 0-20, count to tell the number of objects and compare numbers. (Operations and
algebraic thinking): understand addition and subtraction within ten. (Number and Operations

data): describes and compares measurable attributes, classifies objects and counts the number in
each category. (Geometry): Identify and describe shapes, analyze, compare, create and compose
