Biomedical Sciences PLTW

Columbia, Grissom, Johnson, Lee

PRINCIPLES OF BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE PLTW This course involves the study of human
medicine, research processes, and an introduction to bioinformatics. Students investigate the human
body systems and various health conditions. Grades 912 Prerequisite: None Fee: $30 per
semester
Grissom (coming to all other high schools 2016-18)
BIOMEDICAL INNOVATION PLTW Students design innovation solutions for the health challenge
of the 21st century. They work through progressively challenging open-ended problems, addressing
topics such as clinical medicine, physiology, biomedical engineering and public health. They have the
opportunity to work on an independent project with a mentor or advisor from a university, hospital,
research institution, or the biomedical industry. Grades 9-12 Prerequisite: Teacher Approval Fee:
$30 per semester
HUMAN BODY SYSTEMS PLTW
Students examine the interactions of body systems as they
explore identity, communication, power, movement, protection, and homeostasis. Students design
experiments, investigate the structures and functions of the human body, and use data acquisition
software to monitor body functions such as muscle movement, reflex and voluntary action, and
respiration. Exploring science in action, students building organs and tissues on a skeletal manikin,
work through interesting real world cases and often play the role of biomedical professional to solve
medical mysteries. Grades 9-12 Prerequisites: Principles of Biomedical Science, Biology Fee:
$30 per semester
MEDICAL INTERVENTIONS PLTW This course provides students with experiences in
investigating various medical interventions that extend and improve the quality of life including
diagnostics, surgery, bionanotechnology, pharmacology, prosthetics, rehabilitation, and life cycle
choices. Grades 9-12 Prerequisite: Principles of Biomedical Science and Human Body
Systems Fee: $30 per semester
MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY This course introduces students to the technology component of health
services. Course content specifies core knowledge and skills related to the informatics pathway which
includes interpreting electronic data, electronic communications, legal and ethical issues related to
technology, use of medical equipment, and research. Grade: 10 Prerequisite: None
