We carve our questions

into searches for answers,
looking in mirrors
to see our own reflections,
which are but mere
extensions of the mind.
Holly Crawford

Take my words
and twist them
to fit the sahpe
of your ear.
Thread your tongue
with my emotion
to burn all ears
with words
not spoken.
Holly Crawford

He sat on the sh.ore with tears

rolling gently from his eyes.
His pail was not yeat full
and his plastic shovel was floating away,
Lynne McGregor

Communication
My friends - why friends?
Just "hi" and goodbye friends.
Old friends - new friends;
Too many, but few true friends
/Gordon*

I was going to wirte a poem on this paper,

but the words were so young, innocent and beautiful
that I wanted to keep them inside my head,
in hopes that they would contaminate my mind
with innocence.
Holly Crawford

Little blue eyed boy,

Why are you crying?
The sun is shining
Eva MacGregor

did you see the morning sun as it rose up in

the sky-did you run through open fields where the grass
grows very high-did you ever see the clouds cover up the sun
as raindrops fell towards the ground one on top
of one-have you ever heard the waves crash upon the shore-as mighty winds swept the ocean floor-as sunset came upon once more
Kathi Mintoft

My eyes tell lies to everyone;

lies that I'm having artificial fun.
My pupils always seem dilate,
but honest teacher, I'm straight!

Valedictory Address
GUEST ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
I have come to a point in time where I find myself almost speechless , which a lot of people will agree
doesn't happen very often .
I have reached a point in my life where it is time to say goodbye to a lot of people and things that have, together, formed what will always be a precious memory. We must now say goodbye to a
school, Western Canada, that has had most of us five days a week for three years .
Its image will not soon fade
even though some of us wish it would. We are now all headed in divergent paths, a sad thing, but a sign that we
have reached a turning point in our lives . Wherever we go , I hope that our last memories of high school will be
good ones .
There are few of us who will soon forget a football game, cheering the boys in red and white, a rousing
round of squaredancing during Western Week, or Wolfman wandering the halls on Greaser Day . Sitting in the parking lot watching the seagulls, or in the gymn watching basketball , or in the front hall munching a chocolate bar,
if you were lucky enough to get one out of the machine.
These are fond memories of Western, but to me, the most important is that Western .is people . It is people
that you may never see again, people that you got to know and have fun with in class, laughing, smiling people,
people that you hardly know but you ' ll never forget, and people that will mean something to you forever .
Western is learning about yourself, your personality and your relationship to society.
And Western is learning about others, understanding their points of view , appreciating diffe rent kinds of
people and learning to accept all for what they are. Western is a life experience and an important part of each
one of us .
By now , most of you are probably wishing that I had been left speechless, but there is one thing that I
want to do, and that is to read you a poem that sure means a lot to me. It is a poem about life and I will let
Diane Rutledge say something to us all, through her poem "Go Gently Through the Years ", about how to face problems in growing up and growing into the world around us.
Go gently through the years
But go with strength .
Don ' t be ashamed of tears,
Of anger or of fears,
For they ' re a part of you and you're alive.
Go gently through the day
But go with pride.
Show that you know the way ,
In the things you do and say ,
For they're a part of you and you ' re alive.
Go gently through the night
But go in peace .
Know for yourself what's right,
Keep all your goals in sight,
For they're a part of you and you ' re alive.
Climb mountains while you man,
And sing your songs.
Start living every day.
It won ' t be long before you turn around
And wonder where life ' s gone .
I think that what she is really trying to say is be yourself, understand yourself and be proud of your individuality . Don't take life too heavily . Go easy, but go knowing your own values and how you will stand against
obstacles. Be happy that you're alive and don ' t waste your life wishing for something you can't attain or trying
to be something you're not. You are you , and you are unique .
I hope that each of us will take
I think that all of us have something pretty special, and that is life.
this gift and use it to its best advantage to us and to others .
Thankyou all for being yourselves and for each being a precious part of my memory of Western.
I wish all
of you the best of luck in the future.
God bless you.
I'll sure miss you !
--Shelley Kermack
It has been almost three years now since that rosy fall September third of 1971. That was my first day of
High School, and as I sat at breakfast with a space in my stomach that refused to allow my toast to taste any
better no matter what kind of jam I used, I realized that I could not b~ the only person with a few reservations
about the value of advancing an education past the Grade Nine level.
Indeed , as I am now just as unreadily
perched on the doorstep of Grade Twelve, and the years before me, I begin to have my doubts about the valu e of
a University Education, and my toast again tastes bland no matter what jam I use.
The moral you may derive from this is that despite the fact that I have, in three years, had the faults of
High School education painfully displayed to me countless times, the same will probably apply later; it is only

my perspective which changes . The importance has long since left that distant September, the blah jam, and the
reservations about beginning a new experience.
I now realize the test of toast is not in the jam, just as the
test of an education is not in the facilities, but rather what we put into the education.
This brings me to my first point. A point which on examining a few old yearbooks seems to be the oldest
cliche of oratory efforts such as this:
"It is not the building, but the people, that makes a High School."
With this one life truism in mind, a trauma of great proportions hit me. What are the people at Western Like?
Who is the typical student at Western? What does he do to make Western what it is?
By answering these questions I knew I would find out exactly what Western truly was, under its cloud of
classrooms, books, schedules, and events. It was to be no easy task, but dauntless I embarked to locate a typical Western Student; there was to be but one .
A quick search of the cafeteria yielded no results .
I was already disillusioned . Where else would a typical student go? He wouldn't be talking in the main hall, though social acceptability may have dictated it. He
wouldn't be in the library; it is not the place to bat about the rhetoric. Not in the office fighting his timetable; our typical student has no complaints . The gym is not his sanctuary from pressures of academics. He does
not ~nhabit the segments of the school devoted to fine arts, for the obvious reasons. Labour is offensive , so he
does not participate in shops.
Science requires math , a course in which he never managed to best the fifty mark.
He would probably never find the Mirror or Acatec office, and he isn't a poet anyway. A council meeting would
never have bearing on him . . . not there.
His type of people con't hang around the amphitheatre. The front lawn on a warm day is great for lounging,
but has no action. The parking lot is full of drunken maniacs with their own credit cards, not typical of
Western Students.
It begins to appear the typical student does not exist. But no; a hasty bit of fatalism, for down the hall
strolls Western's typical Student. Summing up all that Western is by his mere existence. He radiates High School
from head to foot.
Everything a High School Student should be, is, and ever was.
Skipping the third period
he comes; dressed in decaying Adidas and bluejeans, whistling an Alice Cooper tune . With legs unused to being out
of a desk, he stumbles, and drops the accumulation of every parent notice and report card he received since that
first September in 1971 .
My joy at the doscovery was smothered by a shocking sight. Amongst that bundle of yellowed notices, stood
out white and clean, a ' Request for Transfer' form. Western ' s typical Student was ready to leave !
My faith in humanity and school spirit shattered , I could ask but o~e question of this single human tribute to our school-- "Why?" The reply was quick, and did not spare me. Western's only typical student looked up
to me and said:
"I just didn't seem to fit. "
This brings me to the second moral of . the day. Everyone has individual characteristics which, combined,
form the soul and heart of our school.
It is the people, individually, whom I have known at Western that have
made anything I have done here worthwhile.
In the group of people whom I know at this school, if even one had
been missed during some course in time , I would have suffered directly .
In this respect , what I think of Western can only be completely varied from the impressions each of you may have. We are all typically untypical of
what people at Western are like, and it is this diversity which has kepy me in some semblance of sanity over the
years and holds some promise in the future.
The third portion of my speech consists of the traditional message to the graduating class. This is what
should be the accumulation of all my experience, rolled into one . If you listen and apply it to your own life it
should m'ake your way into the world just a little easier .
I have learned over the years that the game of life is much like an uphill game of croquet . A game which
involves not only the taxing skills of aligning shots but the added inconvenience of handicapping slope on the
field . The harder you hit the ball, the further it goes; but , we know it will always roll back , just as we
seldom receive full rewards for our effors elsewhere.
Every once in a while the ball goes rolling up the hill after a good hit and does not roll down .
It is
stuck on a rock . At this point we can be sure of a penalty.
It is your choice to risk the penalty and hit the
ball again from further up the hill , hoping to find another rock, all the while knowing the ball could roll back
to where you started originally , the difference being you are now behind--with a penalty .
Applied to your lives, this parable has another moral application . As we apply effort to our goals, sooner
or later we get ahead. The penalty will always be that we are leaving someone behind .
If we proceed with the
penalty, we must always keep in mind that at any time the rock may give way and we will find ourselves at the
bottom of the hill again, with most of our friends now stuck on a rock halfway up .
As long as you remember this as you ' re swinging away on the side of the hill, failure or success will al ways be tempered by the memory of where you were before .
