INVESTIGATING INQUIRY

1. STEM Manifesto
We continue the Educating
STEM series by drafting belief
statements in STEM education
that will lead to local versions
of a STEM manifesto.

2. Investigating
Inquiry
Educating STEM will
investigate the inquiry cycle
and explore problems and
projects with Karl Wendt.
The session will also include
opportunities to dig into
Engineering Grand
Challenges, time for Tinkering,
and Problem curriculum
development.

3. Explore Robotics
The Unofficial Robotics
Challenge will feature robots
built using the Hummingbird
Robotics kits. See page 2 for
challenge details.

INQUIRY
Dr. Karl Wendt
March 12
8:30am to 2:30pm
Southern Tier West,
Salamanca, NY
The Educating STEM Series continues to explore pedagogical
approaches to STEM. Central to STEM instruction is the Inquiry
Cycle and the exploration of solutions to problems and inquiries.
Dr. Karl Wendt will join the series to answer the question: Can
problems spark enough creativity in learning to dig deep into
standards and content?
Dr. Karl Wendt is the Founder and Executive Director of Discover
Create Advance or DCA, a non-profit providing STEM focused
training and hands-on projects.
He started his career as an Industrial Designer, where he earned
several patents for innovations in product design and engineering
at Maytag Appliances. After reflecting on how much making things
as a kid with his father in the garage impacted his design work, he
went to graduate school to find ways to make education more
relevant and engaging through hands-on projects.
He became a teacher at High Tech High in San Diego, California.
There he taught applied physics, created a comprehensive STEM
learning studio, and developed a summer program. His students
designed and built unique robotics projects that have been
featured in publications, on the BBC, and at the Tech Museum in
San Jose, California. Many of his students have gone on to
successful STEM careers.

Dr. Wendt left teaching to find new ways to scale hands-on learning
and change the culture of the classroom for students and teachers everywhere. As the Dean of the
Discovery Lab at Khan Academy and the creator of Khan Academys Discoveries and Projects webpage, he
investigated how to rapidly scale great hands-on learning experiences.
At DCA, Dr. Wendt currently focuses on building products, programs, and teams that improve the culture of
the classroom through immersive leaning experiences. He shares what he has learned about integrating
technology into the classroom and project-based learning at a conferences and events around the country
every year.
Registered participants will receive a copy of PBL Starter Kit by John Larmer.

The rules
1. The robot must be built and
programmed using the
Hummingbird Robotics Kit.
2. Programming code of your
robot must be demonstrated
during the presentation of your
robot.
3. There must be evidence that
the robot was built and coded
by you and your students.
4. Robots will be presented
during the next Educating
STEM Series session.
Presentations must not exceed
5 minutes in length.
5. Participants attending the next
Educating STEM Series session
will vote for their favorite robot.

The prize
The educator with the most votes
from Educating STEM participants
will be giving a Hummingbird
Robotics Class Set to be used with
students within their school.

How to participate
Just bring your working robot to
the next Educating STEM Series
session. Present your robot to the
group for voting. There will be no
time provided during the day for
robot building and development.

ROBOTICS CHALLENGE
Participants of the Unocial
Professional Development Robotics
Challenge must use their Hummingbird
Robotics Kit distributed at the last
Educating STEM Series session to build
a working robot with their students.
The intent of the challenge is to
professionally explore the
Hummingbird Kit for curriculum
connections and expose students to
robotics and STEM thinking. Robots
must be built and coded with your
students. All participants at the next
Educating STEM Series session will
vote on their favorite robot after a brief
presentation of each robot and the
programming code that runs it. The
educator of the winning robot and code
with the most votes will take a
Hummingbird Robotics Classroom Set
back to their school to use with their
students.

Intended Audience
STEM Leaders and Lead Teachers interested in learning and sharing
about STEM education and sharing local successes with other
educators.
