BEYOND-THE-BASIC PRODUCTIVITY TOOLS

!
Name: Kacee McEntyre
Grade Level: Kindergarten
Content Area: Math
Beyond-the-Basic Productivity Tool Used: KidSpiration
Standards Addressed: MCCK.OA.1
Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images, drawings2, sounds (e.g., claps),
acting out situations, verbal explanations, expressions, or equations.
Blooms Level of Critical Thinking:
Remembering Understanding Applying Analyzing Evaluating Creating
Description of how to implement in the class: The teacher will introduce the activity by modeling how to
add and subtract numbers less than 10. We will use many different ways- counting on hands, objects, claps,
drawings, equations etc. This specific activity will focus of drawings and equations. When the students
walk in, the teacher will ask the students if they can add simple things like 1+1 or 2+2.

The teacher will then walk through the steps of how to add and subtract by counting on your hands. She
will use word problems to model this. Ex: Billy has 2 pencils and Martha has 1 pencil. How many pencils
do they have together? The teacher will show that you start with the first number, which is 2, and hold two
fingers up. And since we want to know how many they have together (key word) you add the second
number, which is 1, and hold one more finger up. Then you will count your fingers to see how many you
you have up, which would be 3. The teacher would then go over other ways to add and subtract numbers.

The teacher would then give the students a tutorial on KidSpiration and how to use the activity shown to add
and subtract numbers. The students would be shown that yellow tiles represent the starting number, green
tiles represent numbers being added, and red tiles represent numbers being subtracted.

The teacher would then challenge students to create a simple word problem and write an expression to go
along with it and solve it.
Level of Technology Implementation (LoTi): This activity remains as a level 2 until the students are able
to add and subtract numbers on their own. To move to a level 3 and possibly to a level 4, students will be
encouraged to create a simple word problem, form an expression, and solve. The work problems could be
printed and hung outside the classroom to challenge other students in the school to review the problem and
determine the answer to the question.
Description of the sample BBPT file provided *: The graphic organizer visually shows addition and
subtraction problems for students to solve by counting. Students learn math concepts such as add, subtract,
equal, total, together, difference, etc.

Other comments about your proposed BBPT Activity: The KidSpiration activity can easily be extended
to support higher level of thinking and higher LoTi level. This activity was at an introductory level. The
teacher will be encouraged to help students add and subtract numbers greater than 10 and create more
difficult word problems.
