Reading Clusters:
Throughout the reading clusters and individual reading subtests, areas such
as fluency, oral reading, grapheme and phoneme awareness, word identification
skills, and comprehension are measured. In Jacobs reading cluster, he ranked in
the average range and within one standard deviation of the mean. This cluster
focused specifically on letter-word identification and passage comprehension. The
broad reading cluster included both of those subtests as well as sentence reading
fluency. There was a significant difference in the score Jacob earned in sentence
reading fluency when compared to the other two subtests. He scored in the low
average range and was exactly one standard deviation below the mean. This
fluency test was timed. Due to the significant difference in ability, one can infer
that the pressure of being timed had an impact on his performance. The basic
reading skills cluster included letter-word identification and word attack subtests.
Word attack hones in on ones ability to identify nonsense words and his or her
grapheme and phoneme awareness. In this cluster, Jacob scored in the average
range and within one standard deviation of the mean. The final cluster is reading
fluency. This includes oral reading and reading sentence fluency. There was a
significant difference in Jacobs ability to read and how fast he reads. When asked
to complete the oral reading subtest, he had little to no trouble. He scored in the
high average range and one standard deviation above the mean. However, again,
when he was timed, he struggled to score similarly. As stated previously, he earned
a score in the low average range and exactly one standard deviation below the
mean. Again, this illustrates the impact that a time limit can have on Jacobs
achievement.
Math Clusters:
The math clusters evaluate calculation, word problems, and fluency of
calculation and math facts. When comparing the applied problems subtest and the
calculation subtest in the mathematics cluster, a significant difference was
observed. Jacob scored much higher when completing the applied problems. He
scored in the superior range and one standard deviation above the mean. From
this, we can assume that Jacob does better academically when applying problems to
real world events and in word problems. His calculation subtest score was in the
average range and within one standard deviation of the mean. The broad math
cluster includes both of the previous subtests as well as math fact fluency. Again,
Jacob exemplified a significant difference in the timed score and the non-timed
scores. He ranked in the average range and within one standard deviation of the
mean for the math fact fluency subtest. We can assume that time played a role in
this score as well. The final math cluster, math calculation, includes only calculation
and math fact fluency. There was not a significant difference in these two subtests.
Therefore, the overall cluster score fell in the average range and within one
standard deviation of the mean.
Written Language Clusters:

The written language clusters include skills in spelling, writing, and sentence
writing fluency. The first cluster, written language, focused on spelling and writing
samples. There was a significant differences between these scores. In spelling,
Jacob scored in the average range and within one standard deviation of the mean.
However, his score in the writing samples was in the very superior range and more
than two standard deviations above the mean. The broad written language cluster
also included sentence writing fluency, a timed test. Jacob received an average
score in the sentence writing fluency subtest. This score was also within one
standard deviation of the mean. The final written language cluster, written
expression, included writing samples and sentence writing fluency. As mentioned
before, Jacob is in the very superior range when it comes to his writing samples;
however, the timed test, sentence writing fluency, was only in the average range.
