Chutes

and Ladders

Overview

To reinforce mathematical concepts, students can

play a modified version of the well-known
childrens game Chutes and Ladders. This game
can be modified to reinforce addition, subtraction,
multiplication, and division concepts. By varying
the difficulty of questions on game cards, teachers
can easily differentiate this activity.

How to Play

After dividing students into groups of approximately 5 students and providing them
with the required materials
1. Students will each draw one card from the draw stack and the student with the
card that results in the highest answer will go first.
2. After determining who will go first, that student will draw a card and solve the
mathematical problem indicated and then move the indicated number of spaces
on the game board.
3. Rotating clockwise, students will follow the same pattern until one student
reaches the 100 square on the game board.
4. If students land on a square with a ladder, they must move their game piece
forward to the space indicated on the other side of the ladder.
a. If students land on a square with a chute, they must move their game
piece backwards to the space indicated on the other side of the chute.
