are they known for?

Jobs: Hunters, farmers,


architects, engineers, and
priests

They are very well known for


their prediction of the world
ending on December 21, 2012

Mayans were known for


accomplishments in
mathematics, astronomy, and
their calendars

They created two calendars:


Long Count Calendar and
Round Calendar

What is their cultural origins?

Originated from Yucatn


around 2600 B.C.

They later spread in


southern Mexico,
Guatemala, northern
Belize, and western
Honduras around A.D.
250

What is their personal history?

There is evidence that


Paleoindians lived where the
Mayan lived and could be
related

Paleoindians traveled from


Asia to the Americas when
the bridge, Beringea,
connected both continents

By 700 B.C. invented a


writing system

They also invented herbal


medicines, chocolate, and a
sport called pok-a-tok

What is the history of their

impact their success or failure?

Mayan lived in several


Latin American
countries in Central
America and southern
Mexico

Tecotihuacn is the
cultural, religious, and
trading center in 100
B.C.

In 1517, Hernn Cortes


and Spanish arrive in
Yucatn and conquer
the empire.

them?
The Spanish have been associated with
the Mayans
many times.
The Spanish introduced new religious,
economic, and
political ideas to the Mayan society
Many Mayans died from the diseases
the Spaniards
carried with them.
Native people were relocated to towns
with churches
that were built on the indigenous temples

What are the practices/traditions


of the group associated with
them?

Most Spanish were catholic

They converted the Mayans


to Catholicism

Spanish started building


missionaries in Latin America

The Tipu Mayans accepted


Christianity and were
peaceful with Franciscan
friars

In 1638, the Mayans rebelled


for no reason during a visit
from a friar

Do they practice a religion,


philosophy, belief system or
other devotion?

Mayans were polytheistic ,


meaning they believed in
multiple gods.

Their gods were associated


with nature

They believed in
supernatural deities and
sacred forces

The shaman priest had a


very high position

Worshipping ancestors was


important to them as well

What impact have they had on


the world?

Mayans had symbols for writing any


whole number, including zero

Zero was rarely used in other


ancient civilizations, expect for the
Mayans

They also recorded and predicted


the daily, seasonal, and yearly
trajectories of the sun, moon,
planets, and stars in relation to the
Earth.

They did the same thing with as


solar and lunar solstices and
equinoxes, the rising and setting of
planets.

They even predicted likelihood of


shooting stars and comets.
