CHURCH PROFILE
PURPOSE:
The Heart's Delight Baptist Church was organized with the purpose of glorifying God by conducting a
sovereign, Bible-believing, Christ-honoring Baptist Church in accordance with the Word of God as
represented in the Articles of Faith, Covenant and Constitution. These documents reflect the church intent
to: promote the worship of our God; edify baptized believers; teach the whole counsel of God, administer
the ordinances and Biblical discipline; seek to win the lost to Christ through personal witnessing and the
preaching of the gospel; carry on a vigorous missionary program around the world; establish other
independent Baptist churches; defend the faith and maintain a good testimony for Christ in our community
by godliness and good works.

BRIEF BIOGAPHICAL HISTORY:

The Hearts' Delight Baptist Church is located in the southeastern part of Fauquier County, on Route 612.
This church is one of the oldest Negro Baptist churches in the county. Its first meetings began in October
of 1868, when the first efforts were put forth to build a house of worship, by and for the Negro people,
under the leadership of Brothers Jessie D. Howe, and Noah Bumbray.
The founders of the church were Jessie D. Howe, Noah Bumbray, Alexander Morton, Marshall
Hedgeman, George Hedgeman, Wilson Edwards, Willis Brown, and Alien and Harriett Gibson.
In this perilous period the trusted servants of God had the work at heart and suggested an appropriate
and acceptable name for the new church, which was based upon the lesson taught them in the following
lines: "Though hell may rage, avenge and spite, still God will save his HEARTS' DELIGHT."
After a struggle, which lasted nearly two years, the land was purchased on which a house of worship was
erected. A letter of dismission was then granted to sixteen Negro members of the (white) Zoar Baptist
Church, Bristersburg, VA. Their pastor, Rev. T. W. Newman, and delegates with representatives from the
adjacent white churches were called together on the first Sunday in September 1870 to organize Hearts'
Delight into a regular and independent Baptist Church of Christ.
During all those years since the organization of the church and its first meeting in its little log building in
1868 and 69, the struggle had been onward and upward. The sunshine of Christian life brightened their
pathway. The joy of pure religion often made our hearts glad in the service of the Lord.
Hearts' Delight is the mother church of Oak Shade Baptist Church, Catlett, VA, and New Hope Baptist
Church, Bristow, VA.
The original edifice was erected in 1894 at a cost of about $800, on one acre of land purchased from
Marshall A. Gordon on April 21, 1894, for the sum of $25. It is a frame structure 44 ft. long, 34 ft. wide and
14 ft. high, with a seating capacity of about 280 persons. The original frame church building was
remodeled in 1982 and extensively renovated and faced with brick in 1989. The fellowship hall was
completed in 2002.
