Lesson Objectives (i.e. anticipated outcomes of this lesson, in point form beginning with an action verb)
As a result of this lesson, students will be able to:
1. List the eight (8) planets in order from closest to furthest from the sun.
2. Write the numerical value for how long it would take each planet to orbit the Sun, either in Earth days or Earth
years
Teachers Prior Preparation/Organisation:

Print, cut out and laminate stars for dividing class

introduced.

Motivation and Introduction:

1. Students come and sit in a chair that have been arranged in a
semicircle at the front of the class in front of the interactive
smartboard.

10am

2. Teacher instructs them to feel under their chair for a small star. Stars

Small coloured,

are colour coordinated and have either a 1, 2 or blank space on them.

numbered stars

3. Your star colour will match another students coloured star and that will
become your group. When I instruct you to - If you are a 1, come
collect an iPad from me. If you are a 2 or blank space star, come
collect a QR code and find a desktop computer to sit at. You only need
one QR code!
4. Once you select your QR code, scan it with your iPad and you will see
that a clue and URL code come up. This clue is about a planet you will

be researching and the URL code is the link to this website [show on

Weebly

smartboard] where you will find all the resources you need to find out

the required information

ebly.com/ )

5. When you go to the website, ensure that you read Your Mission by
clicking the button on the homepage
6. Show students general navigation around website.
7. Does everyone understand what they need to be doing? Okay collect
your iPads and QR code and lets get started!
Lesson Steps (Lesson content, structure, strategies & Key Questions):
1. Students collect iPad and QR code, and go to a desktop computer and
10.05

work on the task which is as follows.

QR codes
iPads

a) Scanning the code, gives them a clue for their designated

planet.
b) Go to Weebly link (shown on QR code) and read the Your
Mission section.
c) Have to read through information about planets to figure out
which one is their designated planet based on the clue they
were given.
d) Students must use the information they find and put it into a
Google Slide document. There is one slide per planet with a
table on it, demonstrating the information they need to find.
The link for the Google Slide document will be on the Your
Mission page
2. After 25 minutes working on the task the teacher calls the students to
come and sit back in the semicircle with their group member(s) and the

iPad they were using.
3. Call the students back to the chairs in front of the interactive
10.30

whiteboard which are arranged into a semicircle

4. Students are to bring their group iPads with them and sit in their
assigned groups
5. Going through each planet, one by one, each group are to present
interesting facts or information that they were not aware of about the
planet they investigated before beginning the task. Have Google Slide

Google Slide Document

document up on the Smartboard.

Now _____ and ______ you were the group doing Mercury. Would
you like to discuss some interesting information about your researched
planet with the class?
6. Continue this for the remaining planets, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter,
Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.
7. Commend students for all their hard work and explain that the Google
Slide document link and the link to the Weebly with the planet
information will be up on the class KidBlog for them to access to finish
off if needed or use for revision later on.

Tiny Tap (iPad app)

8. Next have students open the Tiny Tap app on their iPads and open the
10.40

quiz Year 5 Solar System Review

9. Students play the quiz in their groups. Once they finish the quiz they
can come show the teacher their score, give back their iPads and sit
back down waiting for the next instruction.
Lesson Closure:(Review lesson objectives with students)
1. In concluding the lesson the teacher opens the Mimio program to a
diagrammatic display/model of the solar system. One member from
each group must come up and drag/move their planet to where they
think it belongs on the orbital paths. Commend students if they are

right and question the class if a student gets it wrong. i.e. Class do we
all agree that is where Venus belongs
2. The teacher will say Who was doing Mars? and have them move
their planet. Then something like Now who was doing Neptune? and
have them move their planet. This is so groups are not called up in
planet order and give away where they are on the diagram.
3. Once all 8 groups have moved their planet the class will be able to see
a large diagrammatic display of the whole solar system.

4. The teacher can hone in on how the Earth is just one planet in our
10.55

solar system that orbits the sun, and how there is still so much to be
learnt about our solar system that we dont know. But I think you have
all done an excellent job on finding out lots of information about all
sorts of things to do with the fascinating planets of our solar system!
Transition: (What needs to happen prior to the next lesson?)
1. Students to give back their QR codes to the teacher.
2. Log off desktop computers.
3. Students return to their desks quietly and wait for further instructions
Assessment: (Were the lesson objectives met? How will these be judged?)
1. A test will be conducted at the end of the Space and Earth Science
unit on the Solar System, assssing students knowledge of the content,
including planet order and orbit time (Objective 1). This assessment
will be formally taken at a later date and not at the end of this lesson.
2. Teachers are to note observations of which students answer correctly
in class when prompted and also what score they got on the TinyTap
quiz, by getting them to each play individually.
