LESSON PLAN
SCHOOL OF EDUCATION

LESSON 4 ORGANISATION
Year Level: 5

Time: 11-11.50am

Date: 16.03.2015

Students Prior Knowledge:

There are eight different planets in our solar

system (lesson 2 and 3)

Learning Area:

Science
Strand/Topic from the Australian Curriculum

Students will also know various information

about each including orbit time, distance from

Earth and space sciences

the sun and number of known satellites

The Earth is part of a system of planets orbiting around a

Lesson Objectives (i.e. anticipated outcomes of this lesson, in point form beginning with an action verb)
As a result of this lesson, students will be able to:

1) Model the relative size and distance from the sun of each of the planets in our solar
system.
2) Visually display and document a planning procedure process to creating a model
diagram.
Teachers Prior Preparation/Organisation:

Make model and bring in to class

Cloth to cover model at front of class

Pull two desks together to sit model on

Print off assignment sheets (1 per student)

Ensure Weebly is up to date and working correctly

Provision for students at educational risk:

Extra supervision for students weaker with use

of technology e.g.

a) Use of iPads- particularly Sketchbook Express

app

(all URL links work etc)

Whiteboard is clean and whiteboard markers work

LESSON EVALUATION (to be comp+leted AFTER the lesson)

Assessment of Lesson Objective and Suggestions for Improvement:

Teacher self-reflection and self-evaluation:

[OFFICIAL USE ONLY] Comments by classroom teacher, HOPP, supervisor:

LESSON DELIVERY (attach worksheets, examples, marking key, etc, as relevant)

Resources/References

Time

Align these with the

segment where they will be
introduced.
Motivation and Introduction:
1. At the front of the class there are two tables pulled together and
covered with a cloth. Hidden under the cloth is a large solar system

Model

model which looks like the images below.

11am
2. Have students identify the different components on the model e.g. the
sun, the different planets and the asteroid belt.
3. Have a discussion and review of the different planets
Lesson Steps (Lesson content, structure, strategies & Key Questions):
1. Introduce major task/assignment. Students are to create their own
diagrammatic model like the example on shown in class. Hand out

Assignment/Task sheet

assignment sheet and go through requirements of the task/

assignment. A digital copy of the task will be available on the class
Weebly.
2. This will be a major ongoing assignment. The focus for todays lesson
will be on the planning component of the task.
3. The teacher will explain how they went about making their
diagrammatic model, and explain the importance of planning and
preparing the model before making it. [Show example of planning]
4. The task; Students must
a) Create a mindmap (using Spiderscribe, bubbl.us or similar)
brainstorming possible design ideas and materials. They may

Spiderscribe, bubbl.us

also research models that have already been made for

inspiration and ideas.
b) Create a Word or Pages document, documenting the materials

Word or Pages

they will require and start creating a step by step method on

how they will make their model.
c) Draw and label their design using Sketch Book Express (app
on iPad) and (when complete) insert the image into their Word
Document.
5. The instructions, requirements and steps for the task will all be

Sketchbook Express
(https://itunes.apple.com
/au/app/sketchbookexpress-foripad/id410871280?mt=8
)

explicitly explained and available for reference on the class Weebly.

This way students can refer back to the task instructions if they are

unsure of what is required, and tick off tasks as they do them.
11.15

6. The tasks will be due at the end of the week.

7. Students work on task for 30 minutes

11.45

Lesson Closure:(Review lesson objectives with students)

1. Teacher to get everyones attention, have all computer screens turned
off and iPads locked so that there are no distractions.
2. Have a few students volunteer, or randomly select students, to come
and show what they have done so far.

Smartboard , Apple TV
or dongle

3. Bring up their work on the interactive Smartboard and connect their

iPad via dongle or Apple TV/ AirPlay connection if needed.
4. Review finer details of assignment and clarify any queries and
questions about the assignment.
5. Conclude by saying I want to show you a cool trick to remembering
the order of the planets in order if you are having a bit of trouble;

Teacher writes My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nachos

and below it Mercury Venus Earth Mars Jupiter Saturn Uranus
Neptune. Explain to students that this is called a mnemonic. Explain
how each letter of the word relates to the other phrase and will help
you remember the order of the planets.
Transition: (What needs to happen prior to the next lesson?)
1. All desktop computers to be turned off.
2. iPads away in desks.
3. Maths books out on desks with a pencil, ruler and eraser waiting for
further instruction
Assessment: (Were the lesson objectives met? How will these be judged?)
1. Students create their own diagrammatic representation of the solar
system which models the relative size of the planets and their distance
from the sun (Objective 1). A marking rubric will be used.
2. Create a mindmap and a Word or Pages document, which documents
and demonstrates the planning process and procedure before creating
the model (Objective 2). A marking rubric will be used.
