Knowledge: Puppeteers create puppets using a variety of materials and construction techniques appropriate to the
character they have in mind. During the design process, they make choices about use of color, texture, shapes, etc. to
create facial expressions, moods and emotions that best suits their characters personality.
Understand that: The use of various materials, colors and shapes can be used to create character puppets.
Do: Students will design and create their own original character hand puppets with folded paper, cut paper, glue,
yarn, feathers, markers and crayon. Connections to theater will be evident in this lesson students will use their
puppets along with vocal expression to act out the character and setting of their puppets.

Pre-assessment experimentation and exploration of facial expression and use of color to express emotion or tell a
story.
Performance task Completion of the paper hand puppet using well constructed folds and glue to create a base for the
puppets facial features. Students will make appropriate selections of materials with regard to color, texture and shape
to create an original character.
Instructional Learning Plan
How will the lesson support student acquisition, meaning-making and transfer of content knowledge,
understandings and skills?
Learning Activities: (Brief summary & description of how you will orchestrate instructional best practices during this
lesson to ensure student understanding i.e. Differentiated Instruction, Marzano, National Board Core Propositions etc.
Session 1) Students will begin with a brief review of existing puppets and discussion to identify the unique facial
features and characteristics that lend themselves to the puppets personality, recognizing specific shapes, colors and
textures. Students will watch a 20 second, stop motion video showing construction of the paper hand puppet.
Construction techniques will be demonstrated First folding the paper puppet, then adding hair, eyes, nose or beaks,
ears, mouth.
Session 2) If needed.
Lesson Closure: Upon completion of the puppets, students will name them and share information about their
puppets personality and voice.

Extended Learning (Homework)


Students will be encouraged to brainstorm ideas for their puppets in advance of the assignment and to work with their
puppets outside of class to further develop their puppets personality.
