I. Performance Objectives (Learning Outcomes):
The second grade student will be able to identify what pollutes our land and where it
comes from by examining pictures and key terms through a PowerPoint presentation.
The second grade students will be able to identify waste and what items can and cannot
be recycled by interacting with a recycling activity.
II. Instructional Materials
The book, What if Everybody Did That? by Ellen Javernick
PowerPoint with vocabulary
Trash (10 recyclable/10 garbage)
Small bags (10)
Popsicle Sticks
PowerPoint with pictures
*Sallys copy of PowerPoint notes

IV. Implementation
A. Introduction
1. Before the lesson the teacher will distribute water bottles, crumbled
paper, wrappers, etc. all over the room.
a. To get the students to student questioning what they will be
learning.
2. The teacher will introduce the topic of pollution by reading the book,
What if Everybody Did That?
3. The teacher will keep the students actively listening and check for
comprehension by asking interactive questions.
a. What do you do with your garbage?
b. Do you know where your garbage goes from there?
c. What happens when people dont put their garbage where its
supposed to be thrown away?
B. Development
1. The teacher and students will use their knowledge to create a
definition of pollution.
2. The teacher will then present a short Power Point that includes
photos of real life pollution and key vocabulary terms. (See attached)
3. The teacher will put the students into pairs and give each pair a bag.
4. The teacher will instruct the students to walk around the classroom
and pick an item to place in their bag. (One item per student.)
5. The teacher will then direct the students to take their bags back to
their seats, empty the bag on the desk, and analyze what they picked
up.
6. While the students analyze their items the teacher will ask them to
determine what their item is made out of.
7. The teacher will instruct students by pair to place their items in the
correct bin in the front of the classroom. (Recycling and garbage.)
C. Closure
1. The teacher will pass out two Popsicle sticks to each student. (One
labeled recycling and the other labeled garbage.)
2. The teacher will then display one photo at a time from the
PowerPoint and direct the students to raise the Popsicle stick that
represents where the item belongs. (See attached.)
3. The teacher will review what the students learned today

1. To accommodate for a 2nd grade student, Sally, who has a visual
impairment I will seat her pair in the front of the room and provide
her with print outs of the PowerPoint slides.

a. The teacher will observe the students performances throughout
the activities and assess their comprehension of the material.
(The teacher will keep track of students progress and
comprehension on a data sheet.)
