Principal's Message
Homework. Amazing how one simple word can strike dread in students' hearts. I know from
my own experience and my two children the joy of not having homework, but as an educated
person and an educator, I also know the weighty importance of daily review--AKA homework.

OFFICE EXTENSION
PRINCIPAL
David Bechtel
Linda Poff, Secretary

At Basic HS our homework serves to review and to enhance student understanding of the daily
work of the classroom. Our teachers work to create assignments that are valid and valuable, and
as such it is imperative for students to do their daily homework. Should your child say they
do not have homework, it is perfectly acceptable for your child to use an hour of their time to
review all notes and handouts from class, check in to teacher websites and Infinite Campus to
check grades, use Khan Academy to review information, and silently read.

Daily practice of a skill enforces the skill and improves performance. Daily homework is
just that: practice of the skills and concepts taught in our classes with the goal of improving
performance and understanding. Every student at Basic HS should spend at least one hour a
night on homework.

GO WRLC Conference 2014

By: Dylan Smith, Basic HS DECA, VP of Career Development

Basic HS students, Dylan Smith, Ana Smith, Courtney Myers, Clarissa Neff, Dallin
Kephart, Adrian Garcia, Christain Koch-Azeke at WRLC Anaheim Convention Center.
November 13-16, 2014, Nevada DECA members attended the Western Region
Leadership Conference (WRLC). At this years WRLC, hundreds of students and
future entrepreneurs travelled to the beautiful Anaheim, California to build their
understanding of various business strategies and building business relationships, as
well as obtaining vital practice for competition.
It all started Thursday morning, November 13th, as students from all over the valley
boarded a group of busses to begin the journey to Anaheim. When they arrived,
they were greeted by countless students and advisors, and were given the immediate
opportunity to attend the opening ceremony where they would here from Capella
all-stars the SoCal Vocals and other speakers. Everyone had a good time. Afterwards
it was back to the rooms to rest and prepare for the days to come.
Throughout the rest of the weekend, students had the opportunity to attend several
different workshops of their own choosing to hear about the topics they were struggling
in. They heard from a variety of speakers ranging from authors, to entrepreneurs, to
adventurists. That Sunday, everyone would reluctantly board the busses to return
home, not ready to leave. As you can tell, the 2014 WRLC was a huge success. We
can't wait to return next year!

Basic High Students Attend the

We R Community 7th
Annual Kickoff Workshop

By: Alexia Faris, We R Community Leader

On October 2, 2014 the students of Basic High School attended the We R Community
7th Annual Kickoff Workshop at the Las Vegas City Hall. Before the event took place,
we had fun networking with students from countless of different schools and enjoyed
a continental breakfast.
The following Basic High School students attended this workshop; Kassandra Garcia,
Alexia Faris, Asha Cooper-Hampton, Anastasia Smith, Melissa Paz-Moran, Anna
Tymoshevska, Abigail Dykes, and Jessica Lopez. We listened to various guest speakers
throughout the entire event. Second year WRC students: Asha Cooper-Hampton,
Anastasia Smith, Melissa Paz-Moran, spoke about how WRC as a whole has influenced
them. Also, they discuss their favorite volunteer activities like the Santa Run.
This kickoff allowed us as students to review this years program, share ideas, and foster
sponsor-school partnerships. We discussed about problems in our society. In other
words, we defended a topic and explained why our topic is the important problem to
receive funding. At the end of this enlightening activity, we all learned that we have vast
amount of problems that we need to fix. Also, how problems in our society are much
interconnected and can be prevented in the near future. Everyone had a great time! We
cant wait for another WRC event!

Senior Commencement
for the Class of 2015

Graduation is Friday, June 5, at 12:00pm at the New

Orleans Arena.

Caps and Gowns

Caps and Gowns should have already been ordered.
Seniors who have not ordered their cap and gown may
pick up a late order form from the Activities Office, or
you may order online at www.HJGRAD.COM. The
cost is $80.00 if ordered before April 1st. After April
1st the price is $90.00. The gowns are a rental and will
be collected immediately after the graduation ceremony.
The cap and tassel are yours to keep.
Caps & gowns will be distributed on May 26th for
those seniors who have completed their check out cards.
Students must pay their fines by May 22nd to receive
their gowns on May 26th. Seniors who do not receive
their cap and gowns on the 26th can pick them up on
June 4th after the mandatory practice.

Graduation Rehearsal
There will be a MANDATORY rehearsal from 12:00
p.m. - 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 4th, in the gym.
Seniors will need to report to the quad area by 11:45 a.m.
School dress is required. Students who do not participate
in the rehearsal will not be permitted to participate in
the ceremony.

Tickets
Admission to the Commencement Ceremony is by
TICKET ONLY. Each senior will receive six (6) tickets
with their Cap and Gown. An additional 10 tickets can
be requested by filling out the Extra Ticket Order Form.
Forms will be given out at a senior meeting on April 15,
2015 and must be turned in to the Activities Office by
Friday, May 1st. Tickets will be distributed after the
mandatory practice. There is no charge for tickets. No
student will receive more than 16 tickets. Tickets are first
come, first serve.

For the 2014-15 school year, more than 16,600 students

applied to a Magnet School or a Career and Technical
Academy. Unfortunately, with only 5,724 seats available,
almost two-thirds of those students were turned away.
Through the development of these new magnet
programs, it is estimated that an additional 3,500 seats
will be generated.
For those unfamiliar with the concept of magnet schools,
their purpose is to improve student achievement,
promote diversity, and create awareness of career
opportunities relative to the fields of study in which
students may be interested. Each magnet school offers
learning opportunities related to specific themes for
students. Any student within CCSD may apply to a
magnet school, regardless of where they reside. Eligibility
for transportation is based upon defined transportation
zones for each school. If the number of applications
exceeds the number of available seats within a program,
a random lottery is conducted to allocate seats to eligible
students.
As you may already be aware, our school is pursuing the
candidacy process to become an authorized International
Baccalaureate World School. Students currently zoned
for Basic HS will continue to be eligible to attend.
Students are highly encouraged to apply to participate
in the magnet program at our school. Students who do
not participate in the magnet program can remain in
traditional programming at our school.
International Baccalaureate, or IB as it is commonly
referred to, is a model for instruction that is implemented
at schools across the globe. IB international education is
a holistic program of study that places emphasis on the
learning of languages, humanities, science, mathematics
and the arts. It is a framework for instructions that
incorporates real-world contexts and themes into all
courses of study. It challenges students to high levels of
thinking, academic and personal rigor, and to develop
skills in areas of interaction to become life-long learners.
It is anticipated that these new magnet programs and
Select Schools will serve to mitigate some of the current
overcrowding at District schools while long-term
solutions to address overcrowding can be developed and
implemented.
This is a wonderful opportunity for our community and
our students. Magnet schools and career and technical
programs typically produce students with higher test
scores who are more likely to graduate from high school.
This program will better prepare our students for success
in college or career.
For additional information regarding Magnet/CTA
programs or Select Schools, please go to http://magnet.
ccsd.net or contact the Magnet/CTA Department at

The partnerships between the IB and universities are strong and have helped IB programmes
to become world-respected and renowned. There are currently 1678 universities in the United

21st century life places complex demands on graduates looking for work so enabling students
