Culminating Activity Outline

Culminating Activity Title: Lets Bounce!!

Unit Title: Quadratic Relations of the Form y=ax^2+bx+c.
Curriculum Document: Ontario Curriculum Grades 9 and 10: Mathematics.
Partner: Jacque Pierre. Course: 4490.
Total Time: 3 periods (72min.)

Culminating Activity Summary

Students will have the opportunity to study the motion of balls in

different sports. They will create a model that depicts the motion of a ball
that follows a parabolic path, and interpret the data. Students will present
their findings in a short presentation using visuals and clear explanations of
the procedures used in obtaining their results.

Timeline

Description of Tasks/Activities

Day 1

The class discussion will take place, in regards

to the different sports that involve the motion of
balls (i.e. mind map).
Complete step 1: Pairs will complete the
introduction portion of the culminating activity.
Complete step 2: Individually, students will
formulate a hypothesis regarding the motion of
an assigned ball.
Complete step 3: Pairs collect and record the
data, obtained by bouncing two different balls.
Complete step 4: Students individually organize
and graph their obtained data in the form of two
graphs (using the graph paper provided).

Day 2

Continue completion of step 4: Students

complete their two graphs.
Complete step 5: Students will input their
obtained data using graphing technology and
compare their graphs to the technological
graphs created.
Complete step 6: Students will use their graphs
to interpret information and answer the
following questions.
Complete step 7: Students will individually
reflect on the accuracy of their hypothesis.

Day 3

Students will be provided a portion of the class

to complete any unfinished work.
Students will create/develop a short
presentation of their findings using technology
or posters, etc.
Presentations/Discussion: Students present their
findings (2-3 minutes).

2) Identify characteristics of -Collect data that can be represented

as quadratic relation, from
quadratic relations.

experiments using appropriate

equipment and technology, or
secondary sources.
-Determine, through investigation,
using technology, that a quadratic
relation of the form y=ax^2+bx+c can
be graphically represented as a
parabola, and determine the table of
values yields a constant second
difference.
-Identify the key features of a graph of
a parabola, using a given graph or
graph generated from technology from
its equation, and use the appropriate
terminology to describe the features.
-Compare, through investigation using
technology, the graphical
representations of a quadratic relation
in the form y=ax^2+bx+c and the
same relation i the factored form y=(xs)(x-r), and describe connections
between each algebraic representation
and the graph.

3) Solve problems by
interpreting graphs of
quadratic relations.

Learning Goals:
!

-Solve problems involving a quadratic

relation by interpreting a given graph
or a graph generated with technology
from its equation.
-Solve problems by interpreting the
significance of the key features of
graphs obtained by collecting
experimental data involving quadratic
relations.

Students will be able to

solve problems by interpreting graphs of quadratic relations.

Rationale for Peters Accommodations*
!

Peter has a specific learning disability (LD). Peters reading and

writing skills are underdeveloped. But, Peter has good oral skills, excellent
memory, gets along well with others and is a visual learner. Due to Peters
disability, he may complete his individually written portion of the
culminating activity in point form. Peter will have the opportunity to work
in pairs, as well as, individually. This activity involves the analysis of visual
representations and is an activity well-suited for a visual learner. His good
oral skills will be acknowledged through the presentation of his findings.
Assessment tools will involve the rubric and observation, as well as, the
completed individual worksheet.

!
Rationale for Culminating Activity
!

This culminating activity provided an opportunity for students to

realize how quadratic relations are applicable in the real-world. This
culminating activity is a simplistic view of how quadratic relations are used
in the real-world. It provides a starting point for students to begin an
investigation into the different ways in which quadratic relations are
applicable in the real-world. Students will be able to realize how to interpret
data from visual representations (i.e. graphs), as well as, develop their
problem solving skills.
