Technology is a tool that can be used in the classroom to assist teachers in their
instruction. There are students that has benefitted over the years from interactive lessons both
special needs children, and children in a normal sped instructional setting. Using technology has
its pro and cons like many things do. Considering technology is what many of us use in our day
to day lives, including children; it can be a great way to present lessons that will engage and
intrigue children. Technology isnt intended on taking over all instructional activities, but is an
important tool that can be used to add to our already informative lessons.
Some technical tools being used today have facilitated students learning. Incorporating these
devices in our everyday experiences in the classroom can indeed support ongoing learning
(International Journal of Education & Development using Information & Communication Technology. 2014, Vol. 10
Issue 4, p93-101. 9p.)

Some of those ways can be teachers making efforts on building an ongoing blog for the
classroom so that students are active in web experiences, and get accustomed to operating them.
Other ways can be making some classroom lessons an interactive experience. Engaging our
students by using small groups during the lesson, and having them participate in the activity,
gains interest and access to technical devices.

Formative assessments are evaluations or testing done to gain knowledge of students

strengths and or weaknesses. This can be done to evaluate progression during a particular point
during the academic year. The summative assessment compares whats been gathered from the
formative evaluation along with the summative assessment to see what goals need to met, and
what the teacher needs to develop for levels needed for instruction. This acts as a gauge for the
teacher to see where students are to properly plan lessons. Technology can be used to actually
collect the data. There are assessments that are online that teachers can use. Some students use
their iPad right at their desk to complete assessments. Some schools provide tablets for students
to use during the data collection points.
Even technology has its pros and cons. Some of the cons of using technology is always
that safety issue. The internet is crawling with unsightly content and information that can be a
danger to them. Teaching students from the beginning on how to surf the web safely should be
the first lesson given before proceeding with them using it. Another con of technology is the lack
of one on one instruction that some may need. Students at times can get lost during a lesson, and
its up to us to provide more personable lessons when using interactive learning. A pro of
technology is the engaging piece it can provide. It can gain a students interest in learning
because it is eye catching and not the typical pen and paper concept. Another pro is that it gives
the teacher more tools to introduce a positive learning atmosphere.
Using technology as your only tool to assess a students learning shouldnt be your only options.
Using a variety of instructional tools is good because all students respond differently and you
want to reach every child. Technology, text books, one on one instruction, and many others tools
just to name a few, should be used. Noticing what reaches each individual child can be

beneficial to the teacher to be able to prepare the delivery of the lesson( By: Yilmaz, Ozgur. Turkish
Online Journal of Educational Technology. Jan2015, Vol. 14 Issue 1, p108-115. 8p.)

ISTE standards require certain assessments be performed. The importance of technology

comes to light because many evaluations are done on the computer, tablet, or IPad. This
becomes very important when a student isnt aware of how to use the device or has very little
experience using them. As a teacher it is very important to be aware of ISTE standards as they
relate to our classroom experiences because it gives us the blueprint of expectations.
Technology isnt intended on taking over all instructional activities, but is an important
tool that can be used to add to our already informative lessons. Being in compliance with
standards as it relates to data needed for assessments, and learning experiences, can provide us
with great capabilities to teach children. Though there are pros and cons to everything, we can
still provide our students with technical experiences in the class that keep them engaged and
eager to learn more!
