Lesson #
___3___
Subject/Grade: 4th grade art
Date and Time of Lesson:
Learning Objective: Students will apply learned color making to create a color wheel.
Lesson title: Star color wheels
Alignment with Standards:

EEDA Standard(s):
9-12- Demonstrate an awareness of personal abilities, skills, interests
and motivations

National Standard(s):
Content standard 1: using and applying media, techniques and
processes
SC Curriculum Standard(s):
Standard 1: Students will demonstrate a competence in the use of
ideas, materials, techniques and processes in the creation of works of
visual art.
o SC Academic Indicators:
VA4&5.1- Students will use materials in a safe and responsible manner
to create art

Developmental Appropriateness or Cross-curricular connections: Students will

conduct an experiment to learn how to create other colors using only the primary colors,
and then apply their new knowledge towards creating a color wheel.
Assessment(s) of the Objectives:
Lesson Objective(s)
1. Learn what primary,
secondary, and tertiary
colors are and how to
create them. Students
will use all three
primary colors to create
the three secondary
colors, and then create
the six tertiary colors.
2. Create a color wheel
only using primary
colors (paint)
Students will
independently create all
12 colors learned to
complete the color
wheel.

Assessment(s) of the
Objective(s)
Students will gain an
understanding on how to
use primary colors to
create any other color

Students will be
assessed by how well
they understand the
concept of mixing colors
to create the secondary
and tertiary colors

Use of Formative
Assessment
This lesson is used
to introduce color
theory to students.
Students will gain an
understanding on
how colors interact
with each other. This
knowledge learned is
needed for
understanding future
projects based on
color theory.

Accommodations: Students that cannot properly use paint will be given alternative media.

Other accommodations will be managed when introduced

Materials: clear cups or bottles, water, food coloring (primary colors), stencils for

tracing, water soluble paint, brushes, pencils, bowls of water for cleaning brushes,
paint trays, paper strong enough for paint, black paper for mounting, glue

Procedures: First, students will be introduced to color theory, and how all colors are
made from the primary colors. Cups of water dyes with food coloring will serve as a
visual on how to mix primary colors to create secondary and tertiary colors (students
may take part in this). After the lecture on how colors interact with one another, students
will be prompted to trace the stencils (stars in this case) onto their paper, and label them
with all off the primary, secondary, and tertiary colors (12 in all). After they finish their
stars, they will then be given brushes, paint (only primary colors), bowls of water, and
trays to mixed paint on. Students will first paint three stars with the primary colors (one
red, one yellow, one blue). After they paint the first three stars, they will then mix their
secondary colors and paint one star with each color. They will repeat the same process
when painting the six tertiary colors. After their paint dries, they will cut the stars out,
and arrange them in a color wheel over the black paper, securing them down with glue.
Finally they have a star color wheel.
Activity Analysis:

Students will take part in the experiment of mixing primary colored water to
create the colors of the color wheel
After the students gain an understanding on how to mix primary colors to create
new colors, they will use this knowledge to mix paint to make the colors for their
star color wheel
