General Goal(s):

This unit is the first of

three with an economic
focus. Unit 8 focuses on
the economic concepts
related to basic needs,
including food, clothing,
shelter, want,
need, scarcity, choices
people make. The next unit
will be about producing
goods and services, and
the third about making
choices.

This is the second unit that

has an economic focus. In
this unit the focus is on the
production and
consumption of goods and
services, especially looking
at therelationship between
production and
consumption with the
physical and human
characteristics of place,
the natural resources of an
area, and how those things
affect the goods and

Individuals, families, and

communities all make economic
choices. This unit focuses on
economic choices made by
families and the decision-making
process
that is involved inmaking those
choices. Choices are often
influenced by beliefs, customs,
and traditions of families.
Families decide where to live,
where towork, and things to buy
based on their culture, traditions,
economic status and beliefs.

It is important to introduce
students to the idea of
technology and its ongoing
effects on society. Students
should realize that
technology is not a new
thing but
includes the invention of
tools and better ways of
doing things since the
beginning of time.
Technology is anything
man has invented to solve
a problem, such as

Assessment Based On
Objectives:

This unit lays the

foundation for
understanding economics
systems. In earlier units
students have learned
about the physical
characteristics of places
and about
how those places affect
what people do, what they
eat, how they dress, and
how they live (1.6). This
unit has them examining
these ideas and the idea
ofscarcity (wanting more
than they can have (1.8)
from more of an economic
system point of view.

services produced and

consumed in the area. In
line with this, students also
look at how production and
consumption of goods has

Economic choices also include

buying now, saving and buying
later, and
sharing resources. Families are
constantly deciding which needs
and wants can be fulfilled and
which cannot.
Because all choices involve a
decision-making process, the
emphasis in this unit is on the
decision-making process.
Students begin to recognize that
all choices
have consequences.The
consequences can be positive or
negative, but all choices have
consequences. Students begin to
predict the consequences of a
choice and choose between the
consequences. By working
through the decision-making
process, students will build the
skills needed to help them
becomeresponsible citizens.
Opportunities to practice using
the decision-making process are
included in this unit.

paper and pencil instead of

drawing in the sand, shoes
instead of bare feet.
The final lesson will
emphasize the process of
problem-solving when
creating an invention.
Students will learn that
anyone can be an inventor.
By identifying a
problem and creating their
own solution, they will
understand that ordinary
people can exhibit a love
of inventiveness.
