Artifact 1 Subtracting fractions exit passes

Standard #6: Assessment. The teacher understands and uses multiple methods of
assessment to engage learners in their own growth, to monitor learner progress, and to
guide the teacher's and learner's decision making.

I chose to use a subtracting fractions exit slip to show my understanding of

assessment. This exit slip was used in my student teaching classroom as a way to identify
whether students had an understanding of subtracting fractions. In this specific exit slip
students were given two problems. The first problem asks the students to solve. The
second problem gives a problem with an answer and the student is asked what is wrong
with the problem and what the correct answer should be.
On this specific occasion we were using this exit slip to see if students had an
overall understanding of subtracting fractions or if the lesson had to be retaught.
Majority of the students showed that they had a deep understanding of subtracting
fractions and were ready to move on to the next topic. The exit slips also showed that
there were a few students who still need extra help with subtracting fractions. This led us

to decide that they would be able to work in small groups with my CT or myself working
on subtracting fractions. The rest of the class would be able to move on to the next topic.
As students in the small group began to understand the concept, they would come back to
the whole group to work on the next topic as well.
Overall, this subtracting fractions exit slip shows that I understand assessment. I
was able to monitor the progress of my students and to make lesson plan decisions based
on their progress. I was also able to intervene and assist those students that did not
understand the concepts and needed more help.
