FUN WITH PHONICS

I. Topic/Grade Level: Reading -2nd Grade English Language Arts

Standards: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.2.3.a
Distinguish long and short vowels when reading regularly spelled one-syllable words.
II. Goals and Student Learning Outcomes:

Goal 1: When given a list of 20 grade level words with long vowel sounds that end in silent
e, (student) will accurately decode with 80% accuracy in 4/5 trials as measured by teacher
observation and data collection.

Learning Outcome 1: Students will explore the Starfall app to gain knowledge of the
magic e rule.
Learning Outcome 2: Create associations with "Links".
Learning Outcome 3: Analyze and evaluate work of peers with active listening skills and
precision.
Learning Outcome 4: Reflect with journal entries.
Learning Outcome 5: Synthesize with a final video project with a story or song.

Diversity / Differentiation:
All students have IEPS
Students will use dragon dictation to assist with journal entries and other written
tasks if appropriate.
Students with writing difficulties may use a digital journal.
Students with attention/organizational needs will use a check off list to guide them
through the lesson.

Use PowToon to create an introduction
Students will use IPads and/or student netbooks to access apps and digital journals.

VIII. Prior Knowledge: Prior to this lesson, students have: reviewed vowel sounds and names,
learned all letter sounds for consonants and short vowel sounds for vowels and
demonstrated understanding of decoding with consonant vowel consonant words. Students
will have also had experience with the IPAD apps included in the lesson as well as using
student netbooks.
Lesson Placement in the Unit: This is lesson 1 of 4.

Procedures:
1. Lesson Introduction / Anticipatory Set:
Teacher Created PowToon Video will introduce a problematic reading situation that is
resolved by magic e
2. Direct Instruction:
Include this in a video presentation which includes stopping points, open ended (1.
What do you already know about letters?, What is different about magic e?) and closed
questions (Does magic E make a sound? What is magic es magic power? Who does
magic e help? What is an example of a magic e word? ). Teacher will show CVC words
and place a magic E at the end and show students what magic E does with each
vowel. Teacher will then show how the word changes when you take the e away.
Student friendly language included is the e makes the vowel say its name.
3. Student Interaction with lesson content / Guided Practice:
Students will be asked to stop and think about questions presented within the lesson.
Students will be required to use a thumbs up for understanding and a 1-4 finger system
for multiple choice questions presented in the video. The teacher will monitor for
understanding and will clarify throughout the video as needed.
4. Independent Practice:
All work will be completed in in class time.
The lesson will take 3 days and will include exploration of starfall, journal entries
including the rule for magic e and application with Links (story that links one words
with a similar sounding or rhyming word, e.g. skate-late : I wanted to skate but I cant
since I am late). Students will synthesize their learning and integrate it into a song or
story created with Garageband or IMovie.
5. Presentation / Review / Closure:
Have students present their video projects on their IPads to the group. Finally, the
provide a summary on what they noticed the students have learned about magic e.

Evaluation/Assessment:
1. Student journals, projects, and progress within apps will be included as formative
assessment. Summative assessments will occur on a trimester basis and will include a
formal reading assessment such as the Core Phonics assessment or Phonics for reading
assessment modified as needed to test according to the goal (20 words 80% accuracy).

making it a great choice for collaborative projects.

to create animated presentations through video by manipulating pre-created templates,
imported images, music and user created voice-overs.

Starfall is a free reading and writing program accessible through the website and apps that
teach children in how to read in English. Starfall is useful for students from pre-kindergarten
through second grade. The website and apps teach by using games, videos, and phonics.
