Set Induction/Introduction of Lesson and Learning Target (connect to past and introduce current; this
should be motivating and engaging!! You must state this learning target at the beginning of the lesson):
Today we are going to start a new economics unit where we will be learning about goods and services.
Today, we will be focusing on buying goods. To help us understand our new vocabulary, we will be
reading a story about a little girl and her mother and how the little girl wants to do something nice for her
hardworking mom. Please stand up and push in your chairs and show me how you would quietly tip toe
over to the rug if you were a ninja!

Body:
Read portion of A Chair for my Mother out loud to the group. Be sure ELL Student has their own book.

Can anybody tell me what the little girl wanted to do for her mother?
Have you ever wanted to buy something? TPS about something you have ever wanted to buy. Use
random name caller app to call on 2 students.

Remain at carpet for I can statement

Our I can statement is, I can write about a time I used money to buy a good. Or, yo puedo escribir
de una vez que us dinero para comprar artculos.
Today, we are going to pretend that we are the like the little girl from the story, and we are going
to practice buying goods with our very own money! Now, goods and services are new words that
we havent talk about yet and we will be reviewing them before we get started. So, lets take 5 giant
steps and return to our seats to practice our new vocabulary
At seats. Bring out anchor chart .
A good is an item that people purchase that satisfies a want or a need. Can you repeat that after
me? These are things that you can touch and feel. Can anyone give me an example of a good from

our book? Why? Thats right! The chair that the little girl wanted to buy for her mother is an
example of a good because it satisfied a want or a need. Its something that I could go to the store
and buy and we could touch and feel it.
A service is a job that you pay somebody else to do. These are things that you cant really touch or
feel, which makes them kind of tricky so we will be talking about them later. For example, the
mother is a waitress and she is performing a service. A customer pays her to take their order and
bring them things.
What does it mean to buy something? What do you use to buy goods? We use money as a way to
pay for the items that we buy. What are some examples of money that we use?

Get out money and goods and services cards

Now, we are going to practice buying goods using this play money that we normally use during
math centers. Everyone is going to get $5 to spend.
To practice, we are only going to buy 1 item. Its okay if you still have some money left over, and
you probably will.

First, you may look at the items that are for sale in the shop. Then, I want you to figure out what
you are going to buy and how much it is going to cost you.
Once you have decided on what you are going to buy, you can take your money up to the front and
give the cashier (me) the money and you will get to take your item with you.
We will spend 5 minutes buying our goods and then we will do some writing about it.
After 10 minutes, call the class together and pass out writing paper and change SmartBoard slide.
As a review, we are going to write about what we just did! Can anyone remind me of what our I
can statement is? We are going to be answering the question, have you ever bought a good?
If you look at the board, you will see what you need to include in your writing. The first thing is
that you must tell me how much money you spent- Dont forget to a dollar sign! Then, you must tell
me what a good is. Finally, give an example of a time that you bought a good, either today or
another day.
This will be for a total of 3 points if you include all of the items we just talked about.

Conclusion/Review of Objective and learning that has occurred during this lesson; Connection to future
learning:
Today we started learning about goods and services. Can anyone remind me what a good is? What was our
I can statement? Do you think that we did that? Lets pat ourselves on the backs for doing such an awesome
job today! Next week we will learn about services.
Alternate plan: If SmartBoard doesnt work, write the I can statement and questions for students to answer
on the board instead.
