Human Factors
Hearing
The ear is not often used in information perception, except in communication through speech.
Nevertheless, if the eyes are overtaxed in a particular task it may sometimes be possible to relay
on the ears instead.
Sound should be reserved for warning signal.
Task is easier if a bell or buzzer sounds when the limit is exceeded.
The signal must be clearly distinguishable from background noises, as is the case, for example,
with sirens on fire engines and police cars. The signal must be regularly interrupted where there
is continuous background noise.
The light intensity (amount of light which falls on the work surface)
*10-200 lux is sufficient where the visual aspect is not critical, e.g; in the corridor of
public building, provided no reading is required. Minimum required intensity to detect
obstacles is 10lux.
Higher intensity may be necessary for reading notice board and the like, or prevent
excessive differences in brightness between adjoining areas (such as driving into
tunnel). Adjustment of the eye can take a fairly long time if the differences in
brightness are large.
*Reading normal print, operating machines and carrying out assembly tasks can be
considered normal visual task.
*It is sometimes necessary to use localized task lighting. This can compensate for
shadows or reflections on the work surface. For special activities such as visual
inspection task, much higher illumination levels are used to enable fine details to be
distinguished.

Human Factors
The Relationship
(Sponsors)
The treatment can be made more interesting by widening the diversity of contact or
extending the time spent making these contacts.
