Anethnographyisaresearchmethodologythatrequiresthewritertocarefullyobserve,
analyze,anddescribecommunitiesofpeopleparticipatingingroupactivities.Attheirbroadest,
ethnographiescanbewrittenaboutanentireculture,butethnographiescanalsobewrittenabout
smallgroupsofpeople.Forexample:studentsinacertainclass,asportsteam,astudygroup,or
asocialclub.
FortheDiscourseCommunityEthnography,yourtaskistoidentifyadiscourse
communityontheUNCCharlottecampus.Thismightbeacommunitythatyouareinthe
processofjoining,oracommunitythatyouarenotapartofatall.Itmightbeanacademicgroup
orasocialgroup.Tocompletetheethnography,youwillstudythisgroupusingthefollowing
threemethods(besuretogetpermissionfromthegroupmembersbeforebeginningthis
research):

sketches,notes,textmessages,posts,ortweets,caninformyourwork.
