Clahchischilliage Votes To Protect Native Americans
Santa Fe, NM In order to protect New Mexicos Native Americans, Rep. Sharon Clahchischilliage voted on Tuesday for the House Budget, which includes provisions that directly funds programs that aid Native American communities. As a legislator, I have always put our families first, Clahchischilliage said. This budget took great steps toward investing in our Native American communities, and I was proud to get behind that. Among other things, the budget provides $207,000 for the Southwest Indian Law Clinic; $274,000 to the Native American Health Center; and nearly $100,000 for Native American suicide prevention efforts. Rep. Clahchischilliage also voted for a budget amendment sponsored by Rep. Brian Egolf that would have allocated $500,000 to the Center For Native American Health; $350,000 for the Institute for indigenous knowledge and development; and $200,000 for the Native American alliance for community health and wellness. The budget amendment also allocated $300,000 to the Higher Education Department to offer dual credit to tribal colleges. This amendment did not pass. ###
