Legislation To Allow Sick-Day Transfers Clears House Committee

State Workers Would Be Able To Donate Sick Leave To Colleagues In Medical Emergencies
Santa Fe, NM Legislation that would allow state workers to donate sick leave to their
colleagues in a medical emergency passed the House Government, Elections and Indian Affairs
Committee on Wednesday by a unanimous vote. Rep. Conrad James is sponsoring the legislation
(HB 403).
People should be allowed to help their co-workers who are facing a medical emergency, James
said. This legislation takes extra measures to protect our state workers, but also ensures people
are not abusing the sick-leave system.
All sick leave donations must remain within a department or division. In addition, a worker
cannot donate his or her leave without having a minimum amount of sick leave. This bill will not
affect any previous collective-bargaining agreements.
