    InSonnet146,Shakespeareidentifiesthewithinhissoul:throughvividillustrations,
    Shakespearefoundimmortalitythroughthebeautywithinhimself.Itisrevealedthat
    Shakespearequestionsthepointoflife.Whydowespendanendlessamountofeffortof
    objectsthatrots,crumbles,andfadesawaytonothing?Ratheritwouldbewisertoinvestour
    timeinamoredivinemanner,suchthingsthatdonotceasetobecomeeverlasting.Thisis
    theideathatisconveyedthroughSonnet146.Toemphasisethisidea,Shakespeareuses
    literarydevicessuchasimageryandmetaphortopaintthesufferingwithinhissoul.For
    example,Shakespearehascomparedhissoulasasinfulearthasawaytodemonstratethe
    miserylivingforworldlycauses.Asfortheoutsideappearance,wallssocostlygayisused
    todescribeaportraitofhimselfwherehemaybesufferingwithin,butpaintsoverorputsup
    wallsofhappinessasawayfromallowingotherstoknowhisviewsoflife,whyspendso
    mucheffortonthingsthatwillcometoanend.Alongthissonnet,Imagery,isanothertool
    usedtoexpresstheisshownhere:Shallworms,inheritorsofthisexcesseatupthycharge?
    Asshownhere,animageofdecaying,rotting,imageryisplacedbecauseShakespearewants
    topushontheideaof,suchthingslikeclothes,hair,andhousewilldeterioratetonothing,his
    questiontowhatisthepointofitall.

    NotonlydidShakespeareconveyhisideasthroughliterarydevices,butalsothougha
    useofdiction.BySoul,Divine,andDeath,hewasabletoexpress,shift,andemphasis
    thetoneorideainthesonnet.Forexample,thecenterofShakespearecomparisonswashis
    soul.ByusingcomparisonsofaSinfulEarth,orFadingMansiontohisownsoul,withinhis
    sonnet,Shakespeareisabletoexpresshissufferingonamuchdeeperlevelifhewereto
    simplyusehimselfasthecenterofhiscrisis.Divinemaybeonlyusedusedonce,butshifts
    theentiretone.Whilebefore,Shakespeareusesatypeofdarkcacophony,suchassinful,
    worms,andsuffer,butwhentheuseofDivineisbroughtin,anewideaisapproached
    withoutabandoningthetheoldone.Forexample,Shakespearequestions,whatisthepointof
    itall?Atthispointratherthanrepeatingthisdrama,hisreachoveramoreholy,religiousview
    isshownhere:Buytermsdivine,insellinghoursofdross.Thisbringsupanideaofrather
    thanwastingyourtimeinearthlythings,spendyourtime,wealth,andenergyonthethings
    thatareeverlasting.Lastly,DeathisusedasanavoidableroutethatShakespearerevealsto
    usalongthelastcouplet,tosetourworks,andrichesnotofearthlymanner,butofamore
    divinepresence.
    Inconclusion,thepoetsufferswiththeideaofhishisworks,time,andeffort,fading
    intonothing.Inhiseyesnothingwillstandintheend,butactstowardsaholypresencewillbe
    everlasting.Withthis,thepoetfindsbeauty,andsharesitwithusasthereader,sothatothers
    mayreceivethistruth.Thepoetreceivessatisfactioninhislifethroughhisideaofholiness.
