InSonnet146,Shakespeareidentifiesthewithinhissoul:throughvividillustrations,
Shakespearefoundimmortalitythroughthebeautywithinhimself.Itisrevealedthat
Shakespearequestionsthepointoflife.Whydowespendanendlessamountofeffortof
objectsthatrots,crumbles,andfadesawaytonothing?Ratheritwouldbewisertoinvestour
timeinamoredivinemanner,suchthingsthatdonotceasetobecomeeverlasting.Thisis
theideathatisconveyedthroughSonnet146.Toemphasisethisidea,Shakespeareuses
literarydevicessuchasimageryandmetaphortopaintthesufferingwithinhissoul.For
example,Shakespearehascomparedhissoulasasinfulearthasawaytodemonstratethe
miserylivingforworldlycauses.Asfortheoutsideappearance,wallssocostlygayisused
todescribeaportraitofhimselfwherehemaybesufferingwithin,butpaintsoverorputsup
wallsofhappinessasawayfromallowingotherstoknowhisviewsoflife,whyspendso
mucheffortonthingsthatwillcometoanend.Alongthissonnet,Imagery,isanothertool
