SAMPLE PROBLEMS
Match a complex load ZL = 50 j100 to a 75
transmission line using a shorted stub.
For a transmission line with a characteristic
impedance Zo = 300 and a load with a complex
impedance ZL= 450 + j600 , determine SWR, the
distance a shorted stub must be placed from the
load to match the load to the line and the length
of stub.

DISTANCE FROM THE LOAD

Locate the point of the normalized load
impedance. Draw the impedance circle. A
Determine the normalized admittance by
rotating the impedance plot by 180. B
Rotate the admittance point clockwise until it
intersects with the R=1 circle. C
Distance from B to C is the distance from the
load the stub must be placed.

LENGTH OF STUB
Locate the point outside the circle where the
stub impedance is zero at the resistive
component and susceptance that has the
opposite polarity. Refer to the coordinates of
point C. D
Identify the wavelength value. E
Begin measuring the length of stub from the
point where R = 0 to point E. (shorted stubs)
