With Triple-Lok, Ferulok and Intru-Lok, "B" after the shape or
style symbol indicates fitting assembled with nut, sleeve or Compressed nomenclature eliminates dashes and spaces
ferrule and O-ring (where applicable). from the part nomenclature for ease of entry except for dash(s)
in size code.
Example: 4 C5BX indicates size 4 Straight thread elbow
with nut, sleeve and O-ring In North America, the compressed nomenclature is used
only for parts with metric hex or wrench pads (forging) and
4 C5BU indicates the same for Ferulok sleeves and braze or weld connectors for metric tubing.
4 CBI2 indicates Intru-Lok assembled with Letter “M” is placed in front of the fitting type code to indicate

nut) Example: 8F87MLS — size 8 Seal-Lok with ISO 6149-2
port end made from metric hex bar.
Metric Seal-Lok is identified with compressed nomenclature.
For parts without the fitting type code, such as pipe fittings and
adapters, the letter “M” is placed at the end before the material

1) Zinc protective plating starts degrading at approximately 500°F.
2) Ferrule material limits the low temperature capabilities.
3) Besides temperature capability, O-rings compatibility with the fluid must be verified before final selection.
See Table A23 for detailed information on O-ring selection.
4) Stainless steel loses strength at a faster rate than low carbon steel as the service temperature increases.
Please refer to the temperature derating chart on Page A31 for more details.

Table A12 — Port Detail — ISO 11926

1) Nominal tube OD is shown for the standard inch sizes and the conversion to equivalent millimeter sizes. Figures are for
reference only, as any boss can be used for a tubing size depending upon other design criteria.
2) See SAE J846 for more information.
0.2
3) If face of boss is on a machined surface, dimensions d2 and L3 need not apply as long as corner radius R0.1 is
maintained.
4) Diameter d5 shall be concentric with thread pitch diameter within 0.005 in (0.13mm) FIM, and shall be free from
longitudinal and spiral tool marks. Annular tool marks up to 100 µin (2.5µm) max shall be permissible.
5) Tap drill depths given require use of bottoming taps to produce the specified full thread lengths. Where standard taps are
used, the tap drill depths must be increased accordingly.
6) Maximum recommended spotface depth to permit sufficient wrench grip for proper tightening of the fitting or locknut.
7) 90 durometer nitrile is standard for hydraulic applications.

NOTE: For port tapping tools, see page N50. For assembly torques see page A41 and A42.

A simple step-by-step approach to selecting the proper tubing
is described below.

extending their useful service life in corrosive environments.
Cadmium and zinc corrode sacrificially, protecting the steel If media and/or service environment is different from the
substrate from normal atmospheric rusting due to the common commonly used ones listed in the general application column,
presence of oxygen, moisture and acidic gases. They are, please consult the Fluid Compatibility chart on the following

attacked by strong bases or water with pH > 12. Zinc reacts
with glycol based fire resistant fluids and forms a gelati-
nous compound that can plug up filters and be harmful
otherwise, in a system with many zinc plated tube and
hose fittings. Steel fittings with zinc phosphate coating or
stainless steel fittings, along with brass fittings in low pressure
applications, are viable options.
The other option is to run the fluid through the system, without
components with moving parts in it, with an auxiliary power
source, to generate and flush the gelatinous compound. Then
re-connect all components, change filters and charge the
system with new fluid.
Zinc phosphate coatings protect steel by covering its surface
and will retard rusting as long as the inhibiting barrier is not
broken.
Caution: Where low toxicity and low corrosion are
required, as in food or beverage applications, steel
coated with any form of zinc or other protective coat-
ings is not recommended.

Notes:
1) Cadmium is not allowed by SAE and ISO stardards for general
industrial and commercial use. Some military applications still
require cadmium plating. These requirements are met with
special (non-standard) processing at extra cost.

Assembly Hints A
Even after choosing the appropriate type fitting for your appli-
cation, there are certain instances when a particular style has
advantages over others.

1. Straight thread adjustable elbows and tees have

several advantages over pipe threaded ones:

tightening
• are easier to maintain There are some instances when it becomes necessary to
connect tube lines of different sizes or tube lines to ports of
different sizes. This can be accomplished by using either tube
reducers, port expanders, port reducers, or jump size fittings.
Achieving the reduction or enlargement is the main concern,
but you should try to use the minimum number of joints
possible.

4. Use conversion fittings and adapters.

There are instances when it becomes necessary to use con-
version adapters for connecting a fitting to a port with different
style threads, for example, UNF thread fitting to a metric thread
port. There are also some instances when it is necessary to
connect tube ends or hose ends with different style termina-
tions to one another or to a fitting. This can be achieved by
using conversion fittings.
Fig. A2 — Adjustable Straight Thread
Allows for 360° Positioning of Fitting 5. Use other adapters and fittings for special applica-
tions.
As a general practice, the use of pipe thread fittings should be
avoided wherever possible. They are susceptible to fatigue
failure in the pipe thread area, loosening due to temperature Tube Flanged or Brazed to Sleeve
fluctuations, galling in the case of stainless steel and aluminum Tube Nut
and also system contamination from the various sealants Tube Brazed to LHB3
which are generally used to affect a seal.

2. Swivel nut fitting should be used with a straight connec-

tor to allow for connections in tight spaces.
LHB3
Swivel end fittings can be used with a straight connector when Fig. A5 — LHB3 Simplifies Tube-to-Tube Connection
space limitations will not permit full rotation of an elbow or tee
fitting.
The combination in Fig. A4 can also be used to stack tube lines
or provide clearance for ports that are relatively close and
within the same plane.

Bleeding Hydraulic Systems

Trapped air in a hydraulic system is one of the major contribu-
tors to inefficient operation. It is therefore desirable to bleed-off
the air from the system. But, with fittings using elastomeric
seals, the O-ring can extrude and cause leakage. It is also not

For example:
Take a C6L (90° swivel elbow) and connect it to a F5L

straight thread port. The center-line distance above the
manifold to the connecting tube may be calculated as

Tube Line Fabrication Guide for Leak Free Systems

Every hydraulic, pneumatic and lubrication system requires
some form of tube line fabrication and fitting installation for
completion. Proper fabrication and installation are essential for
the overall efficiency, leak free performance, and general
appearance of any system.
Start by planning ahead. After sizing the tube lines and select-
ing the appropriate style of fitting, consider the following in the
design of your system:
Fig. A18 — Correct Routing Fig. A19 — Incorrect Routing
1. Accessibility of joints
2. Proper routing of lines
3. Adequate tube line supports
4. Available fabricating tools

Routing of Lines
Routing of lines is probably the most difficult yet most signifi-
cant of these system design considerations. Proper routing Fig. A20 — Correct Routing Fig. A21 — Incorrect Routing
involves getting a connecting line from one point to another
through the most logical path.
Always try to leave fitting joints as accessible as possible. Hard
to reach joints are hard to assemble and tighten properly.
Inaccessible joints are also more difficult and time consuming
to service.
The most logical path should have the following characteris-
tics:
• Avoid excessive strain on joint — A strained joint will
eventually leak. (See Figures A14 through A21.)
• Allow for expansion and contraction — Use a “U” Fig. A22 — U-Bend Allowing Expansion and Contraction
bend or a hose in long lines to allow for expansion and
contraction. (See Figure A22.)
• Allow for motion under load — Even some apparently
rigid systems do move under load. (See Figure A23.)
• Get around obstructions without using excessive
amount of 90° bends — Pressure drop due to one 90°
bend is greater than that due to two 45° bends. (See
Figures A24 and A25.)
• Keep tube lines away from components that require
regular maintenance. (See Figures A26 and A27.)
• Have a neat appearance and allow for easy trouble-
shooting, maintenance and repair. (See Figures A28 Fig. A23 — Bent Tube Allowing for Motion Under Load
and A29.)

Tools for Tube Line Fabrication

Using the proper tool for the job is the best way of achieving
A
good results. Parker sells a variety of fabricating tools which
were specifically designed to help you achieve the most accu-
rate results in 1) cutting, 2) bending and 3) tube end preparation
(flaring, presetting, brazing or flanging). For details on use of
these tools please refer to individual fittings sections and/or the
Tube Fabricating Section.
1) Cutting
Fig. A26 — Correct Fig. A27 — Incorrect
For making smooth, square cuts in metal tubing you have the
choice of:
A) The TP432 and TP1025 Tube Preparation Centers
with an electrically driven circular toothed saw. (The
TP432 can also make cuts at angles other than 90°,
e.g., for dip tubes (page N47 and N48)).
B) Hardened wheel type tube cutters (page N5).
C) Tru-Kut Sawing Vise for guiding your hacksaw for a
smooth square cut (page N5).
D) The 974250 Cut-Off Saw. The Cut-Off Saw can also
make cuts at angles other than 90° (page N5).

2) Bending
For smooth, wrinkle free bending without excessive flattening
Tube Clamps there are a number of benders to choose from:

tube also reduces system noise.
II) Model 424 (page N14). For bending 1/4" through

C) Hydraulically powered bender.
I) Model 632 (page N16). For bending 3/8" through
2" O.D. tube or 10mm through 50mm.
Manual crank and hydraulic benders have accessories for
mandrel bending to prevent tube wall flattening and wrinkling in
case the tube wall is too thin relative to the tube O.D. and bend
radius. As a rule of thumb, if the tube wall thickness is less than
7% of the tube O.D. then mandrel bending is recommended.

Fig. A30 — Recommended Clamping for Dampening Vibration Note: See bulletin 4306-B5 for detailed bending instructions.
3) Tube End Preparation
The tube end preparation depends on the style of fitting being
Tube A B C used. For example, Triple-Lok fittings require flaring, Ferulok
O.D. (in.) (ft.) (in.) requires pre-setting and Seal-Lok requires brazing or flanging.

As a general rule, pipe threaded fittings should not be as-

sembled to a specific torque because the torque required for a
reliable joint varies with thread quality, port and fitting materi-
als, sealant used, and other factors. Where many of these
factors are well controlled, such as particular jobs on an
assembly floor, a torque range that produces the desired
results may be determined by test and used in lieu of turns
count for proper joint assembly.

In hydraulic systems, pressure drop represents loss of energy drops at various flow rates through fittings for fluid indicated. To

The following pressure drop charts were derived from actual The Tube Fittings part numbers are listed below the Pressure
test data and may be used as a guide for determining pressure Drop Chart to which they apply.

*These pressure drop curves were established with Triple-Lok fittings. The pressure drop values can be adjusted for
other fittings of the same size by multiplying the value from the chart by the ratio of Triple-Lok flow diameter to that of
the other fitting, raised to the 4th power.
Example: Find pressure drop for 6C5L at 5 gallons per minute flow rate:
From the chart, the pressure drop for 6C5X is 10 psi.
Also, the ratio of 6C5X to 6C5L flow diameters is 0.297/0.264, or 1.125.
Therefore, the pressure drop for Seal-Lok = 10 x (1.125)4 = 16 psi.
