Debatable Decision on Education
A constant debate that has been going on for a long time is deciding whether to
send a child to public school or private school. Both types of school educations have their
benefits and can offer positive attributes to the attending students. However, after
knowing students that attend public school and students that attend private school, it is
ultimately more beneficial to send a child or teen to a private school. Both types of
schools offer a great education system, although public schools lacks in building
relationships, that is prevalent in private school. The private school system is better for a
child or teen because they have teachers that are more involved in the students academic
success and want to see them succeed far in their lives, it teaches students how to have
better relationships between all people that they encounter, and they teach their students
how to be better behaved and respectful towards others that will some how impact their
lives later on in the future.
Private schools provide a safer, more disciplined, and more ordered environment
than do public schools. (Coleman, Hoffer, Kilgore 4) Private school benefits include
safer school environments, students feel safer in their classes and while on campus due to
on campus security and because of the students actions around them. Being in a safer
environment provides a better relationship with the students and with the teachers due to

more respectful attitudes towards one another. Private schools have zero tolerance against
any type of bullying, or misbehavior in class and while on the schools campus.
Parents who chose private schools cite a variety of reasons, including a desire for
smaller classes, fewer discipline problems, and a stronger curriculum than what is seen in
public schools. (Humphrey) A smaller class size allows the teacher to focus his or her
attention on the student. The closer the relationship with the teacher and of the students
the better the grades and understanding of the information the teacher teaches in class.
Also smaller class sizes allow the teacher to accomplish more in the curriculum and to be
more advanced in what the department requires. In addition, private schools have a
special environment to create bonds with other students in their class and even in classes
below or higher than them. Close bonds between the students allows them to work well
with each other in school projects, sporting events, and any other extra curricular
activities the school provides for them. A minor benefit that some may disagree with is
the fact that private schools wear uniforms which are much more convenient and cheaper
for families. There is no judgment of what the student is wearing because they are all
wearing the same uniform.
On the contrary, public schools have very different standards compared to the
private schools standards. Private schools provide better character and personality
development than do public schools. (Coleman, Hoffer, and Kilgore 4) Public schools
do not take care of the disrespectful behavior towards their teachers and with the students
attending the school like they should. Students are able to use explicit language towards
their teachers without being disciplined for it. The behavior in class is very badly
mannered, for example they will not pay attention, they talk over the teacher, throw

Flammang 3
things, and even walk out during lectures. That does not necessarily mean every public
school but most. Teachers will not take the time or effort to encourage their students to do
well in the class or even take the time to help them improve their grades. Public schools
do not provide safe environments for those who attend. On the news there is occasionally
a story about a gunman on a public school campus, a student having weapons in their
backpack, and even people on the streets coming on campus hurting them! On the news
there are never stories of private schools being locked down due to weapons, gunmen, or
any violence.
Although some disadvantages of private school include paying tuition, it is all
worth it in the end. Children will graduate with a very high education and go to a very
successful college there will not be one regret. In public school there are families that
wish they could send their child to private that cannot afford it, but their kids still do well
and can just as great as a private school student.
The biggest difference between the two types of education systems is overall
performance in grades, effort on schoolwork, and participation in after school events.
Private schools are smaller and thus bring about greater desires of participation in sports
and other activities than do public schools. (Coleman, Hoffer, Kilgore 4) Private schools
provide excellent clubs to be able to put on rsums. There are always plenty of after
school tutoring for students who need peer-to-peer help or even teacher-to-student help.
Sport programs are very important to the schools. According to Mr. Blas a teacher at St.
Josephs had said that a total of more than 110 students of St. Joseph High School play a
sport while maintaining an excellent GPA. Private school provides much more activities
than a public school would.

Another benefit from private school is block scheduling. Block scheduling allows
teachers to interact more with their students and allow them to teach more. Classes last
about ninety minutes each. Also with block scheduling students only have to go to three
classes a day. The first three one and the other three classes the next day. The gap
between classes also allows students to focus and spend more time on their homework
and even giving students much more time to study for a test. Extra time for work will
allow them to improve their grades and scores on tests. Another benefit from block
scheduling is it prepares students for college. Colleges as well do the block scheduling.
Private schools encourage interest in higher education and lead more of their students to
attend college than do public schools with comparable students. (Coleman, Hoffer,
Kilgore 4)
A disadvantage about private school that a parent may have a problem with is
about religious believes. There is no judgment or force upon believes in private schools.
Teachers do not force the students to believe in the Catholic faith but students do learn
about it but does not mean that they will have to live out the faith. Many non-Catholics
attend private school for the education and learn about a new religion that they did not
know before.
The constant debate of public school education and private school education will
not end due to many different opinions of parents, teachers, and students. Although some
opinions are better than others from both sides of the debate the constant argument will
not end. As read above there are many reasons why private school education is a much
better choice for your child or teen that is entering school. Public schools do have some
advantages but there is more information to prove that it is a worse choice to send your

child there. Parents may or may not agree but the facts prove how much better private
schooling is.
