Mission Statements:

The mission of the Bancroft-Rosalie Community School is to strive for student growth and
excellence. We support this with the following belief statements.
All students can learn.
Students learn best in a positive, safe environment.
Students must be prepared to compete and excel in a digital age.
Students individual needs must be met.

The mission of the Bancroft-Rosalie Community School Media Library is to enable students
and staff to become life-long learners and effective users of ideas and information.

Access to knowledge is a vital part of the students educational experience. American
Library Association has developed a set of standards to help define the goals of 21st century
learners. The Bancroft-Rosalie library supports these standards and integrates them
across the content areas.

Standards for the 21st-Century Learner
Learners use skills, resources, and tools to:
1. Inquire, think critically, and gain knowledge.
2. Draw conclusions, make informed decisions, apply knowledge to new situations,
and create new knowledge.
3. Share knowledge and participate ethically and productively as members of our
democratic society.
4. Pursue personal and aesthetic growth.

Policy Adoption:


There were not policies on these topics in the files. After a discussion with the previous
librarian and current LMS assistant, these policies were never formally written until now.
Policy approval by the school board is done during the summer months at the June and July
board meeting. The library policy will need to be formally added to the agenda in June to
allow for comments or suggestions. The board will consider these policies and determine
approval during the July meeting.

Upon approval, policies will be added to the printed teacher packets and online resources
for the teachers and students. A portion of the staff training time at the start of the school
year will be used to discuss the policy and media center resources available.

Circulation/Access Policy

Students are welcome anytime 8:00 to 4:00 when school is in session. It is a privilege to
check out books, but also very important to student learning.

Elementary classes will visit the library weekly as a class. Students will be allowed to check
out up to two books during this time. Periodicals and reference materials can be used in
the library or classroom with teacher permissions for 24 hours. The standard check out
period for books is one week unless special arrangements are made under the direction of
their teacher. They can be returned and checked out during class time as well as open
library hours. If a student has not finished reading their book, a renewal period is allowed
for an additional week. Special permission must be given for additional renewal after
discussion with Library staff.

Please care for the checked out books while in your care. Find a safe and dry location in
your home to store library books while not being read so they can be found quickly. Keep
out of reach of small children and pets.

Overdue books notices are sent with students a week past the original due dates. Damaged
books should be returned to library to assess the appropriate plan of action. If there is a
possibility of repair, the student will be financially responsible for this repair. Lost books
will have an appropriate fine or will need to be replaced with a comparable quality of book
at the expense of the student. Special considerations will be made with Administration and
Library staff to determine financial hardships. In these cases, other arrangements will be
with the student.

All books are to be checked back in one week prior to the semester end. This gives the
library staff enough time to assess inventory. Any unpaid fines will receive daily notices
until it is resolved.

The digital library collection can be accessed year round, anytime of the day, from
anywhere with an Internet connection. Up to five books, can be checked out at one time.
The checkout period will last for one week. Items will disappear from your device at the
end of the week. Daily notifications display on the device to remind the student of the
check in dates. Early check in is available and encouraged so that other students may
access the book. Renewal is only available if there is not a wait list on the book. If the book
is available, the student may check it out again. If the desired book is not available, a
student can place the book on hold. An email will notify the account holder when the book
is available.

Confidentiality of Library Records



The American Library Association Code of Ethics, Point 3 states, We protect each library
user's right to privacy and confidentiality with respect to information sought or received
and resources consulted, borrowed, acquired or transmitted (American Library
Association, 2008). Bancroft-Rosalie supports this statement as a guide for ethical
decision-making.

The school library formally recognizes:

That all records including patron names, library number, or school ids are private and
confidential in nature.

Any records are not to be presented to anyone other than the patron unless
permission from the patron is granted or legal orders have requested access.

That circulation cards will not show previous student names.

That overdue notices and communication will be delivered to the student, not
classroom teacher. These will be folded or in an envelope to help keep the
information private.
All library staff will be trained to understand the importance of confidentiality and carry
out this policy. The Administration at Bancroft-Rosalie supports this policy and respects a
students right to confidentiality.

Roles and Responsibilities


An effective library media program includes the cooperation and efforts of administration,
teachers, students, parents, and community members. Media Specialist can assist in
organizing and the use of resources and facilities. Educators can help develop the student
use and content. The administrators need to support and encourage the team.

Bancroft-Rosalie employs one fulltime library media specialist and an assistant.
The school library media specialist responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Encourage the use of the school media center

Provide easily accessible online resources and training materials

Initiate collaborative projects with staff and administrators

Provide leadership and training for staff and students with new technology

Integrate class projects with media center

Create a positive and friendly atmosphere that is conducive to learning

Prepare yearly budgets and communicate with administrators



The assistant responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Scheduling of the media center

Manage circulation desk and interlibrary loans

Maintains and orders supplies

Maintain library records and statistics

Prepares items for circulation

Prepares overdue reports
