Programa
Dual

Welcome!
We are so excited to have you as part
of our dual-language family. We look
forward to collaborating with you
throughout the course of your childs
dual-language experience.

We would like to provide you with some resources

and suggestions to give your child a jumpstart on
second grade!
By utilizing these resources, your child will be more
prepared for the Spanish second-grade curriculum
and will feel more comfortable in the classroom.
The dual-language journey is one we are all on
together. Working together can benefit the
entire family! Learn and practice with your child.
The more involved the parent, the more
involved the child.
Our desire as teachers is to assist you and your
child as you transition through the D.L. program.

HOW TO
Learn a Second Language
Course #101

Take the BULL By the HORNS

THE AFFECTIVE FACTOR
Becoming bilingual is a lifelong journey. Ones whole person is affected by the struggle to reach
out and make a new language and culture mesh with his/her own first language and culture. A
persons total commitment, total involvement and total physical, emotional, and intellectual
response is necessary for any measurement of success.
The second language learner in the classroom setting is at an age that could complicate rather
than facilitate the acquisition of the second language without the proper environment.
As parents and educators, it is imperative that we provide a positive environment in which we
assist our second language learners in the acquisition of the targeted language. Too much anxiety
can have an inhibiting effect and impede the process of successful language learning.
The latest brain-based research (Jensen, 1995) has shown that in a positive state of mind, the
learner is able to learn and recall better. Language, being a way of life and a foundation of our
being, interacts simultaneously with thoughts and feelings (Brown, 1994: 38). In other words, a
student who feels good about himself/herself is more likely to succeed.
Inhibition: Any amount of low self-esteem, with respect to learning the second language, can
make for strong inhibitions and cause the language learner to create learning blocks. Parents or
teachers attitudes toward the inevitable mistakes made by the child learning the second
language can be experienced as threats to the self, fostering the self-fulfilling prophecy of I cant
do it. Im no good at it and producing a deep-seated fear of inadequacy and deficiency
that creates a barrier almost impossible to break through. Focusing on a childs
strengths is a powerful way to break down mental learning blocks and
overcome any inhibitions; therefore producing a happy and successful
second language learner!
