Top 5 Tips for Healthy Eating at
Restaurants
Written by: Brittany Kaczmarek | Updated: March 01, 2015
Let's be honest: eating healthy is hard. I'm a dietetic intern studying to be a Registered
Dietitian, and I still consider it difficult to eat healthy. There are many challenging aspects of
trying to eat healthier such as making half my plate fruits and vegetables, eating more whole
grain foods and limiting the amount of pizza I eat (if I could, I'd eat it all the time). But, to
me, the hardest part of eating healthy is eating out.
Going out to eat is always exciting, but eating healthy at restaurants can be trying. Restaurants
are in full control of what you're eating, making it hard to have lower fat options and smaller
portions. There are many tips on how to eat healthy while out; however, I have selected five
tips on how to eat healthy when eating at restaurants, Are you ready to eat like a dietitian (or,
in my case, dietitian to be)? It’s time to enjoy eating out without all of the guilt:
1. Look for healthy choices indicated by the menu
Many restaurants are now supportive of a healthy lifestyle. They make it easier to locate
healthy items on their menus by placing symbols indicating certain items as a good choice.
Keep a lookout for these symbols on menus to make selecting healthier options easier. Some
restaurants even have an entire section on the menu dedicated to healthier eating. If the
restaurant you're at does not have any of these options, it can’t hurt to ask your server about
healthier options on the menu. Your server may be able to provide you with this information.
