Assessments Summary

Entry-Level Assessment:
Brainstorming
What does it mean to be a maximum or minimum and increasing or
decreasing?
Students will begin to examine what it means to have a
maximum on a graph.
Students will analyze when a function is increasing and
decreasing.
Students will explore the different concepts of interpreting many
different graphs.
Formative Assessment:
Flashcards
Academic vocabulary and definitions
Students will use Quizlet to create flashcards of each concept
and definitions taught in lecture.
Students will participate in actives on Quizlet to help them
understand and remember the key concepts.
This will help the students test themselves and prepare for the
quiz and exam.
Quiz:
Test students knowledge on the definitions and solving problems.
Students will be able to demonstrate their knowledge of finding
maximums and minimums.
Students will clearly display the definitions of maximum,
minimum, concavity, increasing, decreasing, etc.
Students will be able to illustrate on a graph the following
maximum, minimum, concave up, concave down, increasing, and
decreasing.
Find

Research:
examples with the key concepts and their real-life applications.
Students will find many different real-life applications of each key
concept.
This will allow students to formulate ideas for their project.
Students will find several examples that include all of the topics
explained in class.
In addition students will then formulate a scenario(s) that applies
the concept to real-life applications.

Order:
List main concepts and the different methods of finding each concept.

Students will provide the different methods of solving for

maximums and minimums using academic vocabulary and
chronological order.
Students will demonstrate precise mathematical notation for
each individual step.
Students will apply the second and first derivative test in order to
solve for inflection points, critical values, concavity,
increasing/decreasing and maximum/minimum.

Summative Assessment:
Presentation:
Create a project of some sort containing definitions and create an
example(s) of each concept.
Students will work in groups of two to apply key concepts.
Students will apply what they have learned in class in order to
formulate examples consisting of every concept.
Students will use their creativity and develop a visual
presentation or model in order to showcase their examples.
Students will provide definitions of each key concept in their own
words.
Exam:
Comprehensive exam.
Students will demonstrate what they have learned apply all
definitions and methods.
There will be a few multiple choice and true/false questions
regarding definitions.
In addition there will also me some free response question
where the students will solve for inflection points, critical values,
and graph the function.
